newb question: i know not all gloves will have the same amount of padding but i have never used 10 oz. amateur gloves before so im wondering on average which can you hit harder with. 16 oz sparring gloves or 10 oz. amateur gloves? im guessing the lighter glove but amateur gloves are suppose to have extra thick padding over the knuckles right, so i thought id ask.

It depends, take a new set of sparring gloves and don't hit the bags with them and the padding should be fine so that it takes power out of the punch. Also the 16oz will slow you down alot.

10oz competition gloves vary depending on brand. I feel that Everlast do great amatuer gloves which let you really bang, whereas adidas have an odd shape which seems to make it harder to connect with the knuckles. I've only used Everlast, Topten and Adidas, but I favour Topten and Everlast by far.

You will hit harder with 10oz gloves, even competition gloves.

I think you two are the first I've ever heard say they love Top Ten gloves. I've only worn one pair that I liked, they seemed extra small like a kids size or something. Every other pair I can't make a proper fist in, and you can't really hit with your knuckles.

The AIBA approved Everlast ones are prettty sweet. I like Ringside too. Never used Adidas. The best pair I've ever worn were Grant. They were so small and tight around my hand, felt awesome. Only worn them once though.

Want to try the new Rival ones.

The smaller the glove, the faster and harder the punch is, unless there's just a flukishly soft front padded glove, which is almost never the case.

For general purpose sparring I almost use at least an 18 oz glove or heavier, you feel like lightning in 12-10 oz ones after that.

At some of our school meets they used really old white/black gloves, I never paid attention to the brand, they looked all clean from far away but they looked all grubby up close. You could see your blood on them but the padding had been so messed up you could feel just about everybody's knuckles through them, punchers and nonpunchers. Not cool seeing how dirty the white part looked.
