but Joe is bigger than Leonard naturally

and look at Jones and Lacys faces after the fights im not saying he is a mike tyson or anything but the guy has deceptive power

but ih Hagler could withstand a Hearns cross no issues then Joe probably cant hurt him unless by accumulation

Hagler is the p4p GOAT. He would beat Calzaghe by a wide decision. Too many punches coming too fast. Hagler hit harder and more accurately.

If Hagler can handle the weight disadvantage/jump, he'd win. That's not a given though. As said before, Calzaghe made 168 under different weigh-in rules, talked a lot about how he had problems making weight...he'd be a LHW under the old weigh-in procedures. Calzaghe was a very good fighter, not merely some poor fighter who happens to be bigger.

I think Calzaghe's best chance is to try to outwork him with his quicker hands and also nullify some of Hagler's infighting with holding, and then fighting in and out of the clinch. I've seen Calzaghe do some good work with his free hand (usually his left). In-and-out movement, getting inside (tall order avoiding Hagler's jab while doing this), use his speed and activity, and then get out without staying at long range too much.

My guess is that Hagler handles the jump in weight well enough to win. The fighters who usually suffer the most by moving up are those who rely more on strength and power. For Hagler, that was more of a bonus, he was a technician and a boxer first and foremost. Hagler had very long arms, a reach of 75' despite being only 5'9, and was a terrific technician. He outboxed damn near all of his opponents and outbrawled others. Very versatile fighter who could fight at different ranges and in different styles. Calzaghe leaves himself very open, and Hagler would probably have a field day with his right jab.

Calzahge would utilise the patented sugar ray leonard ' flight not fight ' strategy - on his bike keeping away from the exchanges until 2:30 of the round then open up on the chasing hagler with a flurry of pitty pat punches that annoy rather than hurt hagler - these late round flurries catch the eye of the judges but dont get Joe the decision - as unlike sugar ray , calzahge is not an 80's media darling.

( this is in response to an earlier post that Hagler lost to a WW Leonard )

Hagler wins by UD - remember that Calzahge also had a decent chin so I dont see marvin KO'ing him.

agreed - Hagler was a true ambidextrous fighter , a master switch hitter with a right jab that was said to be as hard as an orhtodox fighters right cross - with those type of tools in his locker you could see a battered and bleeding calzahge dropping a UD.

The only thing Minter had in common with calzahge was being a southpaw - he had none of Joes skills, speed , stamina or chin - thats a stupid comparison to make .

:-( I think Jeffjoiner has been trying ti bait me with this thread, so I decided to leave it for a while and let momentum build.

Now I like Hagler and was a fan, but I dont believe that a MW who was run close by a former LW and beaten by a former WW is going to be able to bully and beat the best SMW ever.
We like to remember our heros of yesterday with rose tinted glasses but that hasnt always been the way.
Calzaghe was a bigger heavier fighter that would have beaten Hagler on the inside and outside.
Remember that all Haglers major name fights were against smaller fighters in Hearns, Leonard, Duran. Now I no there were good wins over Minter, Mugabi etc but Mugabi was also a smaller fighter and not even at the level of a few Calzaghe opponents I can think of.

    Calzaghe by UD

Two fighters with heart and determination, with proven abillity to adjust to different styles. Hagler beeing more effective at what he does, but Calzaghe bigger and with better reach :think

I think it would be the usual scenario, actually. Weeks of predictions about how Calzaghe finally would be exposed. Then the fight night comes, Joe slaps away and suddenly his opponent turns into a normal human beeing.

I think the reach advantage would determine the outcome of this fight. With Calzaghes speed and workrate you just cant afford such a disadvantage. I think it would be close up to the middle rounds, after that beeing smaller gets to Hagler and Joe takes the lead. Close UD in Calzaghes favour.
