In the opinion of George Peterson, trainer/manager of Paul Williams, former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik needs to leave the middleweight division behind, and immediately move up to 168-pounds. On Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Sergio Martinez won a marvelous twelve round decision over Pavlik to capture the WBO/WBC middleweight titles. According to several sources, Pavlik struggled more than usual to make the weight. He weighed in at 159.5 on Friday, but weighed nearly twenty pounds more, at 178-pounds, by fight time.

Pavlik is calling for a rematch....that says it all...he can make weight.....it that was the problem rematch would not be mentioned by him and his team

They also failed to mention the guy has been getting Legless every night and only through half the amount of punches he normal throws in a fight. Surely u cannot base ur argument on a fighter calling for a rematch after they have just been beaten?

I don't see much change resulting from this for Numdine, Martinez looked like he would belt Mundine around reasonably enough.
Not sure if Pavlik should fight a rematch, I don't see him being able to adjust to Martinez, I know he blamed the cuts for making it harder, but I think Martinez could probabaly do the same again even without the cuts.

Mate,,I really have a good grip on what the limitations of my knowledge is on weight, but I'd like to hear a medical assessment expert convince me that for an athelete to increase his weight by 8-9% in 24 hours can perform anywhere near his best.

Good as Martinez may be, he got a gift in this fight.

Dont agree guys...cant take anything away from Martinez

Pav always puts on loads of weight....many would argue thats to his advantage being bigger by 5kgs in the ring.

Exactly. Although I didn't see the fight (just caught rd 12) by all reports Kelly just couldn't handle the speed and style of Martinez.

Regards to the weight...100%. He must have near cooked himself to make 160 if he was 179 a day later. And putting the weigh back on in that amount of time doesn't mean all is back to normal as you rightly point out.

You can't kill yourself in a sweat suit and sauna one day and then ask your body for a peak performance the next.
