They were both protected and only fought at home Joe beat the better competition Calzaghe by decision.
Hey Brother I hope you are well , yes what a fight that would be over 15 rounds , I'm a tight old sod but would PPV a weeks salary for that lol .
Joe defended his 168 lbs title in Germany & Denmark , and then fought In Las Vagas and New York USA @ 175lbs , he agreed to fight Mikkle Kessler in the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen Denmark but both promoters ( Palle & Warren ) agreed it would sell more at the gate in Cardiffs principality stadium , and it did . So in Joe's case you are incorrect .
lmfao. This has been done to death, but... Charles Brewer beat him twice Glen Johnson beat him David Starie beat him Mads Larsen beat him Robin Reid beat him There are probably one or 2 others that beat him as well.
I remember Robin Reid beating him up and knocking him down. The ref actually warned Reid for hitting him FFS when he went down. The ref didn't call it a knock down and let Sven get up. Ref then kept warning Reid multiple times for hitting during the fight. I remembered Reid getting frustrated and shrugging his shoulder like "wtf?". He seemed more careful about his shot placement after that in case the ref was looking to DQ him (at least that was the sense I got). Reid still won that fight IMO (obviously the decision went to Sven though), but sensed he could have beaten up and stopped Sven if the Ref hadn't kept protecting his fighter. One of the worst, most bias ref perfromances I can remember.
Calzaghe would absolutely embarrass Ottke. Probably brutally smack him about for 12 rounds. It would be an easy fight.
Yea but he'd get robbed , as mentioned before in this thread Robin Reid was on the wrong end of a dreadful decision v Ottke amongst others , that ref should have been banned from ever officiating again .
The guy was a damn good boxer although not exiting to the American public who crave knockouts. Had he taken a few risks and fought outside of Germany he would be more highly thought of and possibly considered for the hall of fame. Then again, from Ottke's perspective this is prize fighting and he without question made way money fighting in Germany than he would have fighting abroad. He chose to make as much money as possible in Germany where he was a star as opposed to unifying against Calzaghe. His promoter was more than happy to oblige since they knew he his style would not translate to dollars in the British or American markets. They smartly marketed him and his incredible amauter career where he won multiple tournaments for his country. Can't blame him for that. I do believe Ried deserved to win that fight. I thought Ottke edged both Johnson and Brewer but they were extremely close fights.
Calzaghe would unquestionably be the A side fighter by far, so Sven would have to fight away from home if he wanted the fight. Calzaghe wouldn't need the fight.
Yes Joe was the more ' established ' fighter of the two , other than the die hard boxing fan he wasn't recognised on the world stage , so much so Mundine turned pro targeting 168lbs and specifically Sven Ottke , lol it didn't turn out as planned but it was his aim never the less .
