I'm a Hearns slappy but I consider this a very even fight. I actually think it's a harder fight for Joe than if he fought Hagler at a catchweight. Hearns win ko 8
Tommy's my favorite fighter of all time but style and weight wise this isn't a great match-up for him. At 168 Tommy was past prime and would not be able to keep a relentless pressure fighter with speed like Calzaghe off him. Joe has a very good chin and would take Tommy's best shots, though I would not be at all surprised if he floors Joe early. Calzaghe will warm to the task and probably force a stoppage by about round 8. Calzaghe ain't a favourite of mine style-wise but you have to admit he's highly effective. He can do what most fighters can't and that is change tactics within a fight. he looks awkward but he's as effective as hell.
S by the way, very nice letter you selected! It is in my top 26 favorites! But I must say I am surprised to see you at such a loss for words! Cheers!
Calzaghe is skilled, fast and big enough to win this, along with his activity. His footwork will allow him to get inside, then out like a jack rabbit. Hearns always has a chance though, due to Joe's lack of power.
Hearns is all over him. Joe has nothing to keep Tommy off of him. Hearns is the better boxer and better puncher. I have Hearns confidently
All Calzaghe. Lopsided decision. He'd take advantage of the Hearns legs at this weight. and no way in the world Hearns can match this guy's activity level.
Hearns shutout. That is prime Hearns but putting on muscle to make 168, not the faded one who went there to defend the wbo unwanted one of the 90s, that was a big swiz. joe may get his first stoppage loss early, in the manner of bhop and jones would have done wehn prime since they both dropped him in 1 when faded. However if joe cheats like he did with lowblow on 40something hopkins he may survive to lose.
Calzaghe by UD. Hearns was at his best at 147/154. At 168 and the style that Calzaghe has is a tough matchup for Hearns to overcome.
That scenario is quite possible though the first 5 or 6 rounds could be very difficult for Joe. If he is able to push the pace and isn't sedated by Hearns World Class Jab. I think pace is the key here. If Tommy can box at range and rest when he need to he could cruise. If Calzage can force him to fight for 3 minutes a round even in the rounds Hearns wins that would benefit Joe.
