I was fortunate enough to just now catch the debut of a young fighter named Jose Benavidez out of Phoenix, AZ. This kid won a National Golden Gloves title as an amateur. HE IS 6' TALL FIGHTING AT 140!!! Even at his young age, he already seems somewhat polished (trained by Freddie Roach) and uses his length for leverage on his punches similar to Thomas Hearns.

He began his debut extremely calm and knocked his opponent down with his 2nd or 3rd landed punch, which appeared to be a strong jab, within the first minute. Needless to say, he then TKO'd the guy before the round ended.

There are a number of things that can go wrong for a young prospect, but Jose Benavidez has a hell of a lot working in his favor, especially seeing as how he just made his pro debut at age 17. I will venture to say that this kid will UNDOUBTEDLY hold a major world title sometime soon. What the hell, I guarantee it. Like the title says...watch out for this kid!!!

They really hyped him up. Tompkins and Marotta have him pegged as a can't miss champ. 120-5 as an amateur and shattered this kid's nose tonight with his first punch. One to watch.

Hype is a career killer...poor kid. On paper certainly looks like he has promise.

That kid was already discussed here. He sure looked like someone who has a very good future ahead of him. I just hope that his handlers will guide his career wisely.

The hype is eventually going to put the pressure on him to fight for a title or a big name in 2-3 years time.

Frankie Gomez holds a win over him in the Ams.

He beat him 11-9 in the nationals last June.

I saw a lot of two way action myself. Now of course, the man landed harder shots than the boy, but it still didn't look like man vs. boy. Imagine how that rematch would go in a few years from now.

You have to admit, gomez was handling him most of the time. Jose will have an advantage against gomez once they meet in the pros. But for now, Gomez still tops him by a lil bit.
