    I dont think it would have improved him much, especially at LH where he was almost always at a reach deficit. He needed those leaping power shots to keep the bigger guys in check and a jab might have created more openings for his opponents to counter him? Its hard to tell because he was so dominant, so how do you improve on it?

    I think that Jones allowed his physical assets to define his style. That's been borne out to a point. But I don't agree with you that the jab would have been worthless - or worth less - at the higher weights with his speed and skill. It worked for him against Ruiz did it not? And as a secondary example, Harold Johnson did amazing things with a world-class jab up at HW beating fighters like Doug Jones and Ezzard Charles and Eddie Machen despite his generally being out-reached.

    I do think you are right about his inevitably prioritising power shots though. That is natural enough. But I do wonder if he might have been spared some of the embarrassment in his later career by a properly developed and deployed jab.

    I dont know McGrain as you said Jones was Jones because of his speed. He was like Cinderella when the clock struck 12 on his speed. He became ordinary in every way. Maybe a jab would have helped him slightly post Tarver 2, but I dont see it changing much. I dont think a jab would have kept guys from still touching him and thats where he started having problems.

    All the disadvantages in size, reach, strength etc, came out and smacked him in the face once he lost his speed.

    I've got to be honest, he just looks similar to always to me there. Maybe a little more economical towards the end of the round.

    The jab was used much more in his later career when he was in with the bigger stronger HWs. He practically jabs Ruiz' head off to victory. Why left-hook and risk being countered easier when you can just out-jab your guy and move. Jones was smart enough in doing this when he knew how crucial it was.
