SSM was already a lock for the IBHOF. In all probability so was Cotto (barely) based just on his 140lb run followed by jumping up for a few high profile victories at welter. Both had blockbuster matches ahead with Mayweather, Mayorga, Margarito, and Canelo.

...but, as little as it gets discussed, it can't be overstated what big hypin' deal this was for all boxing fans in 2007 - and in particular a rare sumptuous treat for aficionados of the 147lb division. Now before anybody starts in with surmising that it was some kind of secondary consolation prize for PBF vs. Pac - nay, sir. That circus didn't pitch tents until '09. Other than either of these guys - or their future common rival Tony M. - challenging the weight class' and sport's p4p kingpin Mayweather, this was as good as you could hope to ask for.

Miguel was the ascendant, younger, undefeated and (slightly) favored man to be sure - a 30-0 box office draw and maybe HBO's second biggest name in the years preceding Golovkin's arrival on that stage - but Shane was by no means a gimme and was on a strong run of form since his last double banana peel against Winky. Consecutive stoppage victories over El Feroz and then a wide UD over Collazo (late of a controversial loss to Ricky Hatton) showed he was still formidable, if not quite the ferocious mythical creature he was at 135 and his early days at WW. He also was, if nothing else, a more than solid puncher even as high as light middle - and whispers of "chinniness" had plagued Junito since the super lightweight days.

It played out close, and while the bulk of boricua faithful were happier with the outcome than most of the Azucar contingent, it was a good fight where you couldn't really begrudge it going either way. Not among either man's top five most discussed from their respective careers - but a high level contest worth a revisit.

Great fight, it was close but had Cotto winning 115-113.

I remember the hype Cotto had entering this fight where it was expected that he would probably KO Mosley. Then the fight happens and he’s choosing to box in the second half instead as Mosley had more in the tank than expected.

2 important keys afterwards was that Margarito studied this fight and knew Cotto would gas in the second half of their fight. However Margarito also underestimated how strong and fast Shane Mosley still was as he couldn’t box and move around the ring like Cotto did.

I’d say the Cotto-Margarito-Mosley series of fights is severely underrated when speaking of WW eras.

I was a big Mosley mark and iirc picked him confidently by KO but remember thinking the judges' cards weren't egregious. Two, anyway. :sisi1

I never understood that. As I recall it wasn't even being discussed as a remote possibility, and it was such an interesting and competitive fight.

    I though Mosley edged it.

I rewatched the fight last night and damn that was a great fight, Mosley at 36 was fighting like a 29 year old Mosley who beat De LA Hoya the 1st time. I had it even 5 rounds a piece going into the championship rounds with Cotto taking the 11th and 12th on my score card. I still have Cotto winning by the same score I had in 2007. I could see a draw, Maybeeeee a slight edge to Mosley, but by the smallest of Margins. 7-5 Either way would be acceptable imo. It was a damn close and competitive fight.

    115-113 Miguel Cotto

Good fight, Shane was my favorite fighter. He landed the better punches, but Cotto was more consistent and seemed to control the fight more if I remember correctly… I think it was during this bout, with Manny Steward on commentary calling Mosley a “trapper”. I felt that was a very cool and good description of his style.

I've always had it 115-113 Cotto, too. I'll admit some swing rounds that could've tipped it in favor of Mosley. High-level stuff from both guys. I miss that era and can't believe we're quickly approaching 20 years since.

It wasn't even on the fringes of discussion, which is strange looking back. I don't remember calling for it myself neither tbh and I scored it a draw.
