Watching the fight again I’d say that was easily one of the most skillful chess match I’ve seen this year. Not sure what else was expected from these two, they both displayed excellent boxing skills.
The Beterbiev/Gvodsyk was contested at a higher skill level than the recent Spence/Porter fight. A high pace fight with an absence of clinching made it an exceptional performance from a conditioning standpoint. Since there were no low blows or wrestling the fighters showed respect for the rules. In addition, Gvodsyk's perfect technical form was mesmerizing to witness. Unfortunately for him, he was in the ring with a hybrid of man and machine the likes the world hasn't seen since the terminator. ]
I agree, great fight but I wasn’t blown away by the skills on display. Kovalev still the top dog at LHW, he’d put a beating on Beterbiev.
The punching precision of the fight favored Beterbiev. He landed at a higher connect percentage across all 3 categories. Gvodsyks connect rate was poor at 19%. Most of his attacks from the beginning were ineffective. He was taking more out of himself then he was taking out of Arthur. Arthur was composed and patient , he chipped away at OV and took him apart piece by piece with accurate and precise attacks. Arthur produced a performance for the purist. lol
I thought Beterbiev looked pretty limited before last night, but last night he proved that he knows what he’s doing. I always regarded Gvoz as skilled but vulnerable. He reminds me of Bute.
Kovalev gets annihilated by Beterbiev at this point. Hardly see how that’s even up for debate. (Or at any point, post Ward) Can you imagine Beterbiev in there instead of Yarde in the 9th round of their fight, ripping Kovalev to the body? Because It’s very hard to imagine if you like Krusher.
If you go to the RBR I could just tell that Beterbiev was breaking down Gvozdyk and kicking his ass from the 3rd round. You might have thought it was a chess match, but I just saw Beterbiev systematically break Gvozdyk down, he never had a chance.
I thought Gvozdyk was real tense and Beterbiev was the more relaxed fighter. I thought Gvozdyk would show more skills like lengthening his jab and I hate the way he throws right hands and he did not show any left hooks to the head and body. I did have it even after 8 rounds with Gvozdyk being busy and with his movement but wearing down and Beterbiev coming on hard in 9th and 10th. Beterbiev is just so physical, that along with his chin and power make up for his skill level. Because of that, I think Beterbiev rolls over Kovalev and over powers Bivol.
Kovalev still has the power and boxing skills to take out Beterbiev. If it goes into the later rounds though, I think the determination and endurance of Beterbiev make the difference.
From what I saw, Beterbiev literally took his opponent's legs away with a calculated, venomous body attack. Artur was clearly making some adjustments in there last night. His ring intelligence is underrated.
I think Beterbiev is limited in that you know what he is going to do. It's not like he is going to change it up and start sticking and moving. He does what he does and is good at it. Lots of power, determination, good endurance and the skill he needs to take advantage of though strengths.
What are u talking about? It's a brilliant era, incredibly deep with real pedigree, diversity of styles & a willingness to fight one another too..
They both had hundreds of amateur victories at the highest level, and then went on to become undefeated professional champions. This why they are two of the most skillful fighters to ever step into the ring.
