Hi im 19 yrs old, and im really addicted to boxing in general, i weigh 13 stone 7 at the moment, and im 6ft tall, ive decided to give myself a couple of weeks to try to get my fitness up before joining a boxing club. I know a lot of people say just get fit and see where you end up regarding a weight class, but knowing my height and weight, what class do you think would be the best option for me to try and get down to? Any positve replys will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :thumbsup

At 6' you would probably be an ok size.. not big or small, but ok if you fought at 81kg/178lbs/12stone10! Probably wouldnt be worth trying to get down to 75kg because its too much.

Its wierd how this kinda thing can work cos if you look at margarito from last night he was 5'11 and 147 pounds. Whereas Im 6-6'1 and weigh around 160 pounds and Im not bulky in the slightest. Point im making is its really hard to tell what peoples ideal weights will be due to bone density and the like. Peace.

Before you go to all that trouble close your eyes and let someone hit you in the face as hard as they can. If you go down or get cut don't waste your time.

Thats sounds really sensible, why would i let somebody do that? isnt the whole object of boxing to hit and NOT get hit???

    Where you from mate?

My advice would be to join straight away instead of delaying it. You say you want to get fit, well there is no better way than actual boxing training. Plus any good gym will not let you anywhere near sparring straight away so this therefore will allow you time to get in shape working the heavy bags and doing some circuit training. On the other hand you could take a slightly different approach and going to box fit (Although I only recommend this if you know an actual fully trained good quality coach. This will let you see what it is like, help you get physically prepared and learn the basic moves.

As for what weight category, allow the coach to assist you with that.

Don't listen to derrick's negative shite.

Be well prepared. Bottle of water, handwraps, sensible clothing and a pair of gloves, etc.

You still have plenty of time. I'm not saying you are going to become the next Mayweather or Calzaghe but you are a good age to get involved, learn the basics and enjoy the sports and appreciate it even more. Perhaps some amateur bouts down the line in a few years time.

    Best of luck
