Who takes this tourney. Rules: 190lb limit, every fight is 15 rounds, everyone faces each other once. Entrants: Rocky Marciano Jack Dempsey Sam Langford Evander Holyfield Roy Jones Jr Floyd Patterson Ezzard Charles Gene Tunney
Head to head I would normally pick Evander out of that bunch, but at under 190lb he is still to green with I think less than 20 fights. Roy Jones is perhaps the most talanted but to small, I expect him to lose almost every fight. I know Langford was great based on his record, but I havent seen any of his fights in good quality so I can't really say how he would fare. Patterson was a very good fighter, but I think both Rocky and Jack KO's him, and Tunney has great style for beating him, hitting him with the jab never letting him get set. He has a chance against Chales, but Ezzard still beats him in my opinion. Ezzard obviously loses to Rocky, and I think Dempsey stops him. Against Tunney it could go either way. That leaves Rocky, Dempsey and Tunney. Rocky will eventually track down and stop Tunney, his relentless agression and activity was a nightmare for boxers. Tunney against prime Dempsey is a tough one, Jack never liked clever boxers, but he did beat a good one in Gibbons, if he hurts Tunney like he did in the rematch he will finish him. Its also possible that he could bully himself to a decision. Then again, Tunny was clever, fast and tough, maybe he had his number. Between Dempsey and Rocky I don't know, it would have helped if Id seen Rocky in with more big punchers, because Dempsey will hit him a lot early on (No I do not count the old Joe Louis). If Rocky can take Dempsey's punch he will beat him, but can he? There is really no evidence one way or the other.
I think Rocky wins all 7 fights. Jones has the attributes to stay away but over 15 gruelling rounds I have to assume the suzie q finds a home. Holy starts well but I think Rock wins the final stretch to take a close decision. Charles he has already beaten. Tunney I think loses on points after being broken down. Patterson gets stopped in about 10 rounds. Langford loved to slip and counter but Rocky was comfortable missing shots, wuodnt need to reset and would ultimately stop Sam imo. Dempsey I find hard to call. He almost certainly has a speed advantage but will he still be as quick in rounds 8, 9 and 10? We know Rocky can throw bombs for the full distance, we don't know if Dempsey can survive thay fight. I give Rocky the edge, with some knockdown either way.
Holyfield, because he won't give a sh it about Jack Dempsey or Marciano's " names " and take the fight right to them. It will be them looking to back away from every exchange, not the fearless, tough chinned Holy.
I rate Holyfield the highest head to head, but I feel the cruiserweight Holy was still improving and a bit green. He had what, 20 fights? Or maybe its less. He beat Qawi so maybe he was good enough back then, but I have my doubts.
I would make Jack Dempsey the favourite, but I would not be shocked to see Langford, Marciano, or Holyfield win, depending upon the draw. Ezzard Charles has a fair chance.
My problem with Dempsey is his fights on film aren't the best quality in terms of seeing how defensively adept he is. And we have the heavy knockdown suffered vs Firpo which no defensive master should ever suffer. A guy who's there to be hit, and is within 190 pounds, isn't lasting 15 rounds vs Rocky.
I think that Dempsey had better defense than Marciano, and I think that he started quicker. Those factors to my mind, make it his fight to loose. Of course anything can happen. It also might turn on which version of Dempsey I get. If it is the ravenous monster that was seeking the title, then I can back him fairly heavily. If it is the version that holds the title, and is slowly turning soft, then Marciano might well take him.
Better defence, almost certainly. But better punch resistance I wouldn't bet on. Two men throwing leather with almost all of it finding a home, could you really bet against Rocky emerging wth the W?
