Its not rds its pace and there was no one like Marciano back then, Marciano would rip off the heads and body of Corbett, Fitz . Jim Jeffries would be a tougher battle but its not so much the rds as the pace of the fight that would get to Jim. 5"8 175lb Sharkey gave him a rugged fight, Marciano would be a vicious pit bull vs durable Labrador. Jim was strong but could not compete with Marciano in the power area and 15 rds at Marciano's pace was more than 20 at the old school waltz....Marciano breaks Jeff down for a 12th rd TKO

No Jeffries too. He would get annihilated by a younger prime 167lb fitz in 10 seconds if he tried to crouch against him

I can't see the smaller but capable Bobby Fitz ever doing well against Jimmy Jeff.....

Tom Sharkey was very short and stocky, but I have never seen any real good film footage of him in the ring to where I can get a good idea of his ability against a top heavyweight......

I suppose I too would take Marciano to hammer Jeffries in a 15 rounder.......

rocky takes it, jeffries could give him fits using the mauling tacticts prevelant in his era, but rocky would prove to strong for jeffries. marciano grinds him down into the late rounds then eventually knocks him out cold.

I'm not so sure that Marciano is stronger than Jeffries......... I will say that Marciano was better schooled though........ Skillwise, I like Marciano...... But again, Jeffries was no slouch as an athlete..... Its very close to call this thing........... I still favor Rocco Marciano.........

Some have made some very good arguments in favor of Jeffries, and I can't disagree with all of them. However, history's description of Jeffries states that his defense was highly questionable and had his nose broken on three occasions. In addition, while Jeffries may have been bigger than Marciano, Rocky's best opponents were as big or bigger than a lot of Jeffries' best. Therefore, I really have to ask who was more accustomed to fighting bigger men? Rocky had way more recorded professional fights and may even have beaten better opposition by a narrow margin....

As some have already pointed out, the rule set would be a huge factor, but I don't know if a scheduled 45 round bout would help Jeffries much, given that I really can't see this bout going very long with two big punchers going for broke...

I say this with some degree of hesitation, but I'm inclined to picking Marciano by KO.

The fact that Jeff only had roughly 20 pro fights concerns me a great deal......... Considering it stems from the old days when fighters had 20 fights per year in some cases.......

There has been a great deal of speculation that he actually had a lot more fights that weren't recorded, but I don't give it much merit though.. There is no way of telling exactly how many additional fights he had, who he fought, or what the results were. In fact, they might not even have come against licensed professionals, perhaps explaining why they were never recorded.. as for his number of ACTUAL bouts, we really can't discredit him for this, given that he became champ with only 11 bouts, and beat the very best of his division..

I dispute this. Marciano was a terrific athlete. He was nearly a professional catcher in baseball, which is one of the most athletic positions out there. He was also a star linebacker for Brockton High School. The way rocky bended, dipped, rolled his torso in that crouch in unpredictable athletic angles..one could not replicate those moves if they weren't a top athlete.
Though Rocky was wild at times, and his technique appeared sloppy at other times, in terms of athletic ability rocky was a total athlete.

I think James Jeffries was one of the most crude HW champs of all time. Police Gazette often referred to jeffries as crude which is why he took so much punishment in some of his fights, often against men who he outweighed by 40lb. I think rocky was definitely more skilled in that crouch than Jeffries was.

Yes, but as a fighter, Marciano was very crude early on.... Even by his account, he needed to work extra hard to get up to par as a pro fighter... Marciano was also chunky as a youth; not ripped full of muscles....... That too came from hard work and dedication........ I don't consider Marciano a "Natural" athlete........ Not at all........
