1919 Jack Dempsey vs. 1938 Joe Louis

Last time this match-up was raised I favoured Dempsey early, with Louis being able to get a KO in the mid rounds.
Since then my H2H opinion on Louis has changed a lot and I think he would probably KO Jack within 5 brutal rounds.
I won't write-off Dempsey though, he too is a devastating finisher and definitely has the power to rock/knockdown Joe, either way I think this fight wouldn't get to round 6.

Louis said he didn't like swarmers. He dealt with them just fine, but Dempsey being the ultimate swarmer would have been bothersome for Joe.

I'll still have to pick Joe on a late stoppage

 

I have to laugh, each time these threads come up some joker comes out with "X KO1 Y", despite the fact that the vast majority of non-champs who fought X didn't get KOd in 1.

Louis couldn't KO Conn in 1, why would he KO Dempsey, who had a very good chin? Louis got knocked down more than Dempsey, so if anyone is scoring a first round KO it is more likely to be Jack if anything. But very few fights between reasonably matched great fighters end in a first round KO.

 

Dempsey would kill Louis. he'd shatter his face in a matter of minutes. too much raw savagery. This isnt Max Baer we're talking about! I'd bet the house on it

I will go with Louis ko8. Jack would have good early moments and maybe even score a knockdown He would be in the fight all the way but after 8 rounds of give and take Joe would continue to land his perfect pin point combos and they would eventually cave Jack in, based on Dempsey's style he wouldn't make it to the late rounds. He would be there for Louis to hit and that's suicide against the brown bomber..

 

Dempsey.Louis was a bit to slow of foot and didnt move his head.

 

The primed Dempsey knew how to feint and circle before going in, and he threw fast when he did, Joe would be primed to throw when Jack came at him....who lands and hurts the other first? I think its Jack and he doesn't let up on the hurt and getting tagged Louis and I don't think Joe would recover. Jack by ko within 3.

louis is my favorite fighter but i think this is a not so good match up for him, he's dropped against less than legendary punchers and dempsey is one of the greatest HW punchers of all time

think SRR lamotta but srr has a worse chin and lamotta is about 20 places higher on the p4p list in terms of quality
