Your comments are consistently astute. You must be one of those Will Hunting type janitors.

What would we say of Foreman's finishing prowess if he only faced the likes of Caroentier, an old inactive Willard and a chronically ill Miske?

Can you imagine what he would do to this motley crew? Children staring at the night heavens would still see Miske's head orbiting above.

    Vs Willard?

Foreman may have ended up being the one getting finished....

    Please...

Foreman destroys any version of Jess let alone the 38 year old version who had fought 10 lackadaisical rounds in 4 years that Dempsey faced.

Dempsey by KO in 2. StonehammerJack's speed and ferocity was never seen by Ali. Ali himself said the great Frazier gave him trouble because he had the one weapon Ali had trouble with; a short inside lefthook. Those who saw him said The Mauler speed was the fastest they had seen and his foot movement was extraordinary. Benny Leonard, who many felt was the greatest pfp ever, said in an article BEFORE the Jess Willard fight, that Dempsey was the greatest short punching fighter he eversaw. Ali faces speed of foot and hand he has never seen, power more than even Liston could muster unmatched ferocity and gets nailed and dropped early. Much oddly enough like Willard, Ali would never comprehend what he is facing before the fight and would be ambushed by Jack. More 1st rd KOs than any man in history. JACK DEMPSEY THE GREATEST PEAK FIGHTING HEAVYWEIGHT IN HISTORY KOs Ali in 2!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Well he can't do much more to them than Dempsey did, unless he is actually going to kill them!

    It is most definitely true.

How can being knocked to your knees the opening contact of a fight for rushing in face-first not be significant?

If you read more carefully, you would see that it isnt only that punch, which I did note, and is significant, but the multiple right hands he ate leading up to the knockdown/push out of the ring. Don't omit parts of what I wrote to support your assertions.

And slipping punches from different fighters isn't very scientific. Who was the Dempsey opponent in this study? Which Ali-Frazier fight he was using? For the love of god if he used the third one, he and everyone else citing his efforts should be ashamed..

It's safe to say that fielding punches from Ali may be a bit more difficult than the Dempsey opponent in question. Did they throw an equal number of punches to be slipped? There are too many variables to be scientific, and only one fight cannot give an indication of consistent performance.

That being said, I like Dempsey and respect his style and entertainment value.

Just because I think Ali whips him soundly doesn't mean I hate his guts or that he's some bum...

I think that Dempsey got careless against Firpo, and rushed in to finish him off, and Firpo sprung his trap.

You might well call it an oversight on his part, but it should not be taken to mean that a fighter is likely to hit him at will, over the course of a fifteen round fight.
I think that the study compared the first Ali Frazier fight, to the Dempsey Gibbons fight, along with a Roberto Duran fight and a Ricky Hatton fight.

As you say, it is not a very scientific study, but it is probably the best that can be managed.

Gibbons was a small technical heavyweight, and I would venture to say quite hard to slip a punch from.

Granted he is not Muhammad Ali, but you don't consistently avoid punches from a fighter lie that, without being pretty good at what you do.

The real loser out of the study was Ricky Hatton incidentally, who slipped very few punches over the course of his fight.

There isn't a HW over than maybe Ali himself with far better offensive footwork and head movement than FOTC Joe

Up to 1938 there might be at least something of an argument. Tho I would rank Johnson, Langford, Fitzsimmons, Leonard and Greb higher. At least Jack is near the discussion.

To quote Rick James... "Cocaine is a hell of a drug."
