Sounds a description of Toney in some respects. Very interesting read.

Good read. Was Langford only 20 years of age when he fought Johnson? Being only 20 years old and giving up 30+ pounds vs hall of fame fighter in his prime is a nearly insurmountable obstacle.

The news report I read suggested Johnson was the winner, but I have heard some like Corbett say Langford was the better.

I think the comparison verry unfair.

James Toney was given every oportunity to fight for a title and he often squandered them badly.

Sam Langford beat everybody around multiple times without getting a title fight.

Eventualy he realised that at the end of it all he was still never going to get the title fight he deserved and that is why his motivation and training habits colapsed.

The same thing happened to Peter Jackson.

Jack Johnson beat the hell out of sam langford. It wasnt close. knocked sam down too. Sam admitted "Only time i ever got licked in my career was agaisnt jack johnson". Sam would have never beaten johnson on his best day. Johnson was too good for everyone in that era when he tried his best. Ive watched both langford and johnson on film, and this might upset some but from watching both there is no way sam could have beaten jack johnson.

OH OH here we go! Joe Woodman Langfords manager admitted that Langford got a bad beating in this fight ,being floored along the way, in round 6
Sam Langford" Johnson handed me the only real beating I ever took ,I take my hat off to him ,though I was greatly out weighed".The weights were 156 to 185lbs.And they hated each other.
PLease dont tell me that you are going to spin another fairy tale about Langford getting the best of it in this fight . JIm Corbett that racist ***** who spat in Fitz's face, was notorious as the worst picker of a fight that ever lived, when he picked a winner , before a fight everyone bet on the other guy. If there was one man who hated Johnson more than Langford ,Corbett would be that man.In later life ,having mellowed a little he made this statement to Nat Fleischer."Jack Johnson is the greatest boxer that has held the title." To which Johnson replied ",that means a lot to me Nat as I have allways considered Corbett the Father of Modern Boxing". This was published in the Ring at the time of the Computer tournament
Oh ,and Langford was 23 and had had 56 fights.

Corbett said and wrote a lot of things, he was a lot like George Foreman in that way.

Corbett must have mellowed out in his old age like Sullivan did. Going from being one of the most racist of men to proclaiming Langford the uncrowned king of boxing, is almost comparable to Hitler saying he loved the Jews.
