Dempsey would destroy Wilder, absolutely destroy him. It would be like the Willard fight, except Wilder would be gone in the first, and probably out cold.
Dempsey wouldn't fight Wilder anyway as he ducked black fighters because he hated black people and wouldn't be able to take it if he lost.
I'd take a 60 year old ex-champ any day over some street thugs. Doesn't say though how he'd do vs. modern day SHWs.
He hated black people so much he employed many. You won't find anyone who knew Dempsey that would call him a racist.
Kind of what I was thinking.. Wilder has more power than Willard, but his chin is far worse.. Willard was able to take shots from Jack Johnson for 15 rounds and a bunch of flush shots from Dempsey.. As good as Nichols' check jab is, Dempsey left jook > Nichols check jab Wilder out cold
Wilder is a nothing....a nobody. Dempsey was and is rated as one of the best ever hwt champions. Great fighter vs a zero. Guess who wins?
When I read posts about fighters from 50 years ago or more fighting todays fighters I look at it this way.... Bottle the mentality of the great Dempsey and assume he was born 25 years ago and has had the benefit of todays sports nutrition ( read very refined ped system along with advancements in nutritional science ). As someone else said, if Dempsey fought today he'd be 210 - 220? Sounds right to me. It's the only way it can make sense to me because there is such a size difference compared to todays heavies. How bout do the reverse? If todays heavies campaigned during the 30s how would they fair with horse pills and pasta? I think it boils down to the mental aspect of the game and all real champions will test anyone of equal size from any era.
Fighters like Dempsey were trained down and in perfect condition to be a fighter. With his weight came great speed and endurance. Dempsey today being brought up in the modern world would not be the same great fighter. Dempsey became Dempsey because of the tough world he came from. That world no longer exists.
