I think some of the pro Burger Squad crew are confused about the difference between the terms hobo and bum. Most people use those words interchangeably but there is actually a difference between them. 'A hobo is a homeless person who travels from town to town, picking up odd jobs along the way. They are sometimes migratory laborers and may take long breaks between jobs before eventually returning to some sort of work. So, a hobowho often works for a livingmight take offense if he is simply called a bum. This is because bums almost never work and they dont even bother to travel. They are the dispossessed who stay in the same town, and likely the same sidewalk, day in and day out. So when the Burger Squad crew hear that Dempsey used to be a hobo they automatically assume that their boy would beat him because he's 35-0 against bums.
Bums and baguettes who are bums and make Burger Squads face look like hamburger in time for Halloween
The Manassa Mauler would be a modern day cruiserweight at the most. He's too small for this current crop of HW's. Great fighter, but he wouldn't fare too well against guys that outweigh him by at least 30-40 pounds. People might refer to his fight with WIllard as an example of how he would fare against much larger guys, but modern day HW's are better athletes overall and also the rules have changed substantially from the roaring 20's (i.e. back than, you can stand in front of the guy you just knocked down and continually hit him while he's just getting up. Now you have to go to a neutral corner while the opponent is allowed a standard 8 count.) With the current rules of boxing the way they are, I don't see him being a HW champion in modern day boxing.
I should've been a little more specific with my post. I don't consider WIlder more than an alphabet titlist. I don't favor Dempsey against the very good HW's of the past few decades. I feel like the true champions of the division from the 70's into the mid 2000's would have their way with him. Wilder is a work in progress. He started boxing at a very late age, and who knows how good he'll actually be. he's done what he's had to do up to this point, so you can't knock the guy. I love Jack Dempsey, he's by far and away one of my favorite fighters of the late teens/early 20's. He did become somewhat of a primadonna after winning the championship (was known for taking years off between fights in the 20's,) but he ws a very nasty fighter with a true mean streak to him. I just think his lack of size and weight would be too much, and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't necessarily have an opinion on how he would fare against WIlder although i will say Wilder probably hits harder than anyone Jack has ever faced. I would favor guys like ALi, Shavers, Norton, Foreman, Tyson, Bowe and Lennox Lewis over him. Probably Holyfield as well and both Klitscko brothers (Vitali moreso.) Dempsey was a great champion, but a little too small for modern day HW's. Also with the rule changes, it's hard to assess how he'd look in modern day boxing. It's almost like a completely different sport now compared to when Dempsey was campaigning.
Fair post. So you're saying Dempsey would be CW champ of the world right now and he may or may not best Wilder. One good left hook and it's night night Bronze Burger.
Dempsey today on roids would be a nightmare. The fighters since the 90s without roids would look little different from the Fighters from that time. They don't make hwts like Dempsey anymore. Highly skilled, very quick destructive puncher always motivated to fight to win at all costs.
Some people act like 190 pound guys are MIDGETS...the majority of this forum is detached from reality. Wilder himself is a scrawny 220 pound guy with chicken legs and a questionable chin. I don't think it's absurd to pick Dempsey over him at all.
Wilder would DESTROY Dempsey. And I am saying that as a Wilder 'hater' (I'm very critical of his choice of opposition). But let's get one thing clear: Wilder or any other top 10 fighter in today's HW division would absolutely murder Dempsey.
