Good Christ! You've got it really bad haven't you.
We have Klompton at one end of the spectrum,he is a huge Greb fan and dislikes Dempsey.
And we have you at the other end the Dempsey apologist and number one raa raa raaa rooter! Have you got a frilly skirt and pom-poms for your arms?
I think Dempsey was great ,one of my favourite fighters but; JEEEEEEEZUS GET OFF HIS NUTSACK!

I'm still confused. The citations that you have typed in this thread all appear to be incorrect. Are you reciting them from memory?

The information is what I had written at the top of the article when it was printed out.

Here is another from from the early 50’s as Marciano was champion:

Dempsey never gave you any rest in the ring. He used his left hand almost exclusively the hooks only traveling 3-6 inches. He would also shoot a right uppercut to the chin in the clinches or a right to the heart. He was busy always busy like a tiger. You either had to fight or jump out of the ring as he never stopping hitting.

The year I fought him was 1927 he was far removed from the Dempsey who fought Willard in 1919 but he still was a demon.

Regarding Marciano ...Dempsey’s reflexes are so much faster than the Brockton strong boy it isn’t even funny.

We used to be able to find 25 great sparring partners when training for a hwt fight. Marciano had trouble scrapping up sparring partners before his recent bout with LaStarza and they were not very high class either.

Jack Sharkey A heavyweight champion untold:

    Years later, Sharkey recalled,
“When Dempsey hit me, it was like someone dumped a load of concrete over my head. I never thought a man could hit so hard.”

I actually found those quotes--FYI, they're from an article, Jack Sharkey "...If Marciano Fought Jack Dempsey?," Detroit Free Press, January 1, 1954.

Very minor detail but the actual language in the article I found reads "When I fought Jack in 1927, he was far from his prime of 1919. That year he knocked out Jess Willard in Toledo, Ohio for the crown. But in '27 he was still a demon."

Sharkey also claims that Dempsey might have stopped Marciano in the first round and that Jersey Joe Walcott would have been a better matchup for Dempsey.

Where did you get this info? Your memory and/or your notes seem to be deeply flawed.

Did you just make these quotes and citations up because they seemed to be consistent with what you remembered reading some time long ago? They seem completely implausible on their face, since "Gob" is a well-known nickname for sailor that has been used since at least least the nineteenth century. It has nothing to do with complaining.

There's no record of the Grantland Rice quote in the archives. I don't have access to the New York Tribune but I would be shocked if that Red Smith quote checked out.

You need to look deeper as to the origination of Sharkeys nickname. As stated it was due in part to his constant complaining. “Gob” in Irish slang means MOUTH. As in “shut your GOB”. So the BOSTON GOB in effect meant “the Boston mouth”.

Here is another computer fight. Again thought these were all gone from YouTube but located this one. Unrelated to the subject but very enjoyable to listen to.
