[1929 article] Interesting history of the light-heavyweight division

    I always figured it was because Jack Root's management made such a big deal out of him being the first champ, and the division not really being fully formed at the time.

    I just saw an article saying that his fight against an Australian middleweight with a weak record, Jimmy Ryan, in 1899 was for the light heavyweight championship of the world.

    Also saw another article asking whether he should still be considered the light heavyweight champion after his loss to little Joe Walcott.

    I've seen various versions of an 1895 article referring to Choynski as "light heavyweight champion," but I can't tell whether he was officially recognized as such, or what he did to earn such a claim.

    I generally see the Ryan fight cited as where he won it, but he seems to have claimed it in the earlier Hall fight in 1896.

    I saw the latter too. Especially odd considering McCoy had already beat him (and surely should've been champion, though I've never seen him recognised)
