Yes, that was a calculated risk, but it was only an inactive post Manila Frazier that time wasn’t it? I didn’t see Foreman fight Shavers, Jeff Merrit, jerry Quarry, MAC Foster, Blue Lewis, Gerrie Coetzee first time around.
Morrison was a big puncher up to a level. I never saw his power feature against Lennox Lewis. The other guy he fought was Ray Mercer. After that I don’t believe he knocked live fighters out that were worth much more than the actors in the Rocky film. Micheal Bentt sorted him out.
He fought Punchers only on a conditional level. Cooney was one fight in 6 years. After the last Ali fight Frazier was a danger to himself. Foreman was selective wasn’t he? Foreman missed beating every rated fighter in the annual Ring ratings that were listed above and below him.
How do you know Frazier was a danger to himself post Ali 3? He'd put up a tremendous battle and fought Foreman next fight. The fact is Frazier had only ever lost to Ali post Foreman 1 and had whupped contenders and ex champs such as Ellis, Bugner and Quarry in between. The only guy we really saw him against post Ali 3 was Foreman who almost everyone believes is a bad matchup for him at any stage. You are here arguing Louis' great run going into the Marciano fight, well Frazier was still beating everyone except Ali. You must never have heard of a guy called Michael Moorer then. Unreal. And here's something to chew on regarding your Ring Ratings - Foreman was ranked the top (numero uno!!!!) heavyweight in 1995!!!!!
Old Foreman beats Old Louis imho. Gramps Foreman still had a really nasty jab, a polearm of a weapon, and he was accurate with it. Normally matchups with Old Foreman come down to the fact that old Foreman was sloooww but old Louis wasn't exactly greased lightning himself. Mixing it up close probably isn't going to work for Louis; his ferocious combination punching was largely gone. Foreman showed he had big power left with the way he punched out Coetzer, who was a durable guy. I'd go so far as to favour old Foreman 2-1 over old Louis.
Joe diddnt retire he was knocking out Elmer Ray Pat Valentino and Nino Valdes in so called 'exhibitions' some of them are in you tube nothing is held back believe me! Old joe was still a major force in 51 no matter what the competition at the time.
The same Morrison that got smashed to bits by 11 fight novice Bennt who had already been knocked out and would get stopped again in his very next fight.
And as Foreman sat there at the top of the ratings in 1995, let me in on who exactly below him it was he had beaten besides Moorer?
It’s very true that bald George was still capable up to a level. The surprise was that George could still compete rather than beat the best around. Everyone wanted him to do well, myself included, but his comeback was largely a gimmick and successful only because of a bizarre set of circumstances, largely at the expense of the genuine fighters of the day. He did not climb the ranks like Joe Louis did and I don’t think he beat anybody who looked as good on film as Brion or Bivins after they fought Louis. Have you seen Bivins against Doc Williams or Brion against Charles? I posted both fights earlier in the thread. I would be fascinated with any responses.
But Louis didn't climb the rankings. He was installed as #1 contender at the very beginning of his post-Charles comeback, despite Nat Fleischer describing his performance against Brion as "mediocre" and suggesting he should retire. Just goes to show what a famous name can do for you, specially in a division as weak as the 1950 heavyweights.
Who cares? He was considered to be the top dog via a ratings list you readily credited. I er didn't see you mention Moorer after i retorted to your claim that he never beat anyone in the ring Ratings? Was Moorer not rather high in the ring Ratings when George beat him?
