At first glance, Dempsey's style, like Patterson's, seems made to order for Liston. An in depth look reveals the important differences: #1. Dempsey was a killer in the ring, who snarled at his opponents and would do whatever he needed to to break the opposition down, including operating outside the rules, to a point. #2. When afraid, Floyd tended to freeze up. Jack did the exact opposite and would turn into a tiger, attacking with the instincts of a vicious animal. Nobody would have ever considered nicknaming Floyd "The Mauler." #3. Jack fought from a lower crouch than Floyd and used angles better. It's true that Floyd often dipped lower before throwing some punches, but then again that was a tell of sorts. #4. Patterson had faster hands, but Dempsey was harder to anticipate in there and he hit harder.

Normally, when all else is about equal, I would favor the slugger over the Swarmer. But I consider Jack more of a Swarmer/Puncher. And Dempsey had the heart of a lion. I can see Liston hurting him, but a hurt Dempsey is a horror of it's own level. I'm going with a win by Jack Dempsey, but I'm not betting the farm on it.

I don't know, Dempsey was an animal. Thus is tougher than I first guessed. I honestly have to think about it because of their styles.

Liston's the favorite but compared to Marciano, Dempsey has a HUGE speed advantage, is a better boxer, and more experienced fighting bigger men, so he has a live chance to pull off an upset, but Liston is the favorite.

I'm going with Liston, but I had trouble coming to this conclusion because Dempsey was so chaotic. He could be all over the place, which somehow added to his effectiveness.

That said, Liston was a far better boxer with a far better jab and power.

    Liston KOs him.

The above statement was typed by me. It represents my prediction of how a fight would go between Dempsey and Liston in this fantasy fight thread. It was typed on a cell phone, which is an electronic device that was once just a phone, but has since evolved into a miniature computer with internet browsing capabilities.

A fantasy fight is a type of thread where posters weigh in on who would win a bout between fighters who (usually) never faced each other in their primes. In this case, the fighters are Dempsey and Liston. Liston was a heavyweight champion from the early 1960s/late 50s, who is reasonably highly regarded here. He was notorious for his connections to the Mafia. The Mafia is an American organized crime group active during Liston's reign. Dempsey, by contrast, is a champion from the Roaring 20s who was once considered incredible. His stock has fallen because it is now fashionable to criticize him. During his bout with Tunney, a former lightheavyweight champion, he famously forgot to duck.
