1960s FOTY: What FOTYs would you dispute, why, and what fights would you choose over it?

The 60s is probably the toughest and therefore the funnest to do, of course for most of the ones that were unfilmed, I will pick what would be my choice out of all the filmed fights:
1960: Patterson-Johansson II was a great knockout, a great performance, and perhaps the biggest event of the year, but it was not a great fight imo. Personally, I think Liston-Williams II should be the FOTY as it was probably the best action FOTY and was pretty dramatic at that.
1961: Since I haven't seen Brown-Charnley II, my choice out of all the filmed fights would be Griffith-Paret I or Patterson-Johansson III.
1962: Once again, I don't know about the Hank-Giardello fight, but I have no doubt that Griffith-Paret III was the best FOTY.
1963: Ali-Jones was a good scrap, but I find it hard to believe it was the best fight that took place that year. I know it will meet criticism, but Griffith-Rodriguez III is my pick.
    1964: Liston-Ali I hands down.
1965: Patterson-Chuvalo too awesome to be beat.
    1966: I am satisfied with Torres-Cotton for 1966 FOTY.
    1967: Griffith-Benvenuti a solid pick.
1968: Of course I have never seen Tiger-DePaula, but by the sounds of it, it sounds like it was unequivocally the best fight of the year. As for the next best FOTY, I think the best FOTY would either be Joe Frazier's fight w/ Ramos or Bonavena.
    1969: Why Frazier-Quarry I of course.

Thoughts? You agree? which ones would u change? @George Crowcroft? @Jester?

The only fight I have really strong feelings about is Giardello-Tiger in 1963, but like the Moore-Durelle 1 fight in 1958, it happened at the end of the year so maybe it was to late for some of the writers to cast their ballots. I'm not sure how the Ring arrived at a FOTY. Also, unlike Moore-Durelle, I don't think it was on national (USA) TV. It was Giardello's masterpiece of boxing.

I don't think the Liston-Williams or the Frazier-Ramos fights were such great shakes. Flurries in both fights, but the moments of real competition were relatively fleeting for those fights to be classified as FOTY. The Griffith-Benvenuti fights never really satisfied me, but that's just me, I guess. Neither one of those guys are among my favorite fighters to watch.

I agree w/ you about Liston-Williams and Frazier-Ramos. I just had trouble picking other fights.

I preferred Fullmer vs Basilio II to any other fights I can recall from 1960. Paret vs Thompson are both good picks though. Patterson vs Ingo III is a good mention. Ortega vs Basilio & Griffith could be mentioned for sure in 1961.

Griffith vs Paret III has to be the best fight of 1962. Hank vs Tiger is a good runner up. I definitely preferred Ali vs Cooper to Ali vs Jones, but Ramos vs Moore should've been FOTY. Saldivar vs Laguna is my pick for 1964. By some distance too.

Patterson vs Chuvalo for me too. 1966 would've been Frazier vs Bonavena on my list. Patterson vs Quarry I & II were much better than Griffith vs Nino IMO, Ramos vs Suh was better too. 68 sounds about right as is. Wish I could see that. Yeah, Frazier vs Quarry sounds right for 69. Ramos vs Cruz was good for a runner up.

Some of these FOTYs sound awesome though and it's a real shame that they won't be seen again.

I have to agree w/ you on a lot of those. Fullmer-Basilio II, Ramos-Moore, and Frazier-Bonavena I are all better picks for those years, as well as the Patterson-Quarry fights. I do love the Tiger-Hank fight. Also, Doug Jones and Zora Folley had one of the best fights in '62. Any one of the first two Tiger-Fullmer fights probably could have made FOTY in '62 as well.

Thank you, I'll put that up today, along w/ the 80s. Can't wait to hear your takes on them as well.

    I'll stick with Torres-Cotton for 1966.
