what do we know about him? he was 6'0 185lb heavyweight who entered the ring 18-1 to tangle with top contender cleveland williams. "Chapman was knocked down twice in the 5th, before being put down for the count by an uppercut. This content is protected " Boxing Illustrated, September, 1961, page 30 "Williams, a much bigger man, had hurt and floored Lee (he fought then as "Curley Lee") earlier in the fight, around the fifth. Lee survived the pounding and demonstrated great courage by fighting his way back into it. Just when it appeared that Lee was going to make the distance, Williams put him to sleep with a tremendous left hook to the jaw. As he was counted out, Lee lay peacefully unconscious on his back with his right arm, crooked at the elbow, eerily tracing a circle in the air." Looking over Chapmans record http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=18146&cat=boxer u will see though very inexeperienced, it seems like he had a world of potential.. he had recently scored knockouts over tough experienced competitors like paul andrews and howard king(coming off a draw with archie moore) Does this guy deserve to stand within the ranks of Carmine Vingo, James Shueler, and Henry Snow Flakes, of all young very talented top prospects who had there careers cut shortly??
I saw the fight on TV back in 1959 and it was a very exciting fight, as described in your excerpts from Boxing Illustrated. I remember talking about it with some friends the next day. I don't know what happened to Curley Lee. Was he injured in this fight or did he just give up boxing?
Thanx OF, what was chapmans style do you remember? - i dont know, williams apparently gave him a brutal knockout. he could have hung em up for that. it doesnt say.
