1962 Sonny Liston vs Gerry Cooney, 15 Rounds. Standing across the ring from champion Sonny Liston is challenger Gerry Cooney. Does Sonny intimidate Gerry? Or at ring center, during the instructions, Cooney laughs at the Big Ugly Bear?

It would look similar to Foreman/Cooney. Sonny would make short work of Gerry but he may tell us later that Cooney hurt him.

Ha Ha A good one. Poor old relics, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Young. I still say, he should have fought Tex Cobb, Tim Witherspoon, or a Pinklon Thomas, instead he took cuts in line for a beating, a cash cow.

I would give Cooney a puncher’s chance but otherwise make him a heavy underdog

first of all, Sonny is the most proven fighter here. He deserves to have the edge. However, I really don’t think Sonny necessarily ever beat somebody Cooney might not have also beat. Roy Harris. Eddie Machen. Zora Folley. Even Patterson. That’s really it isn’t it?

But the point is, Sonny beat those guys when they were regarded as elite fighters. We never saw Cooney against Tate, Coetzee, Weaver or Dokes.

We did see Gerry versus Larry. And Cooney showed a lot against Holmes. For instance He took Holmes further into a championship fight than Sonny could ever take Cassius Clay into a championship fight.

But overall, I have to go with Sonny. He’s the legit great fighter here. Cooney is a “what could have been” guy.

I really believe that Gerry Cooney was made for television purposes, sure he looked good facing the geriatric crowd, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Young. Many are giving him too much credit for his size. Liston fought the top contenders that were not washed up, Gerry did. He was a cash cow, he was used. Tex Cobb, Tim Witherspoon, and Pinklon Thomas would blown his chances to fight Larry Holmes. He could have not been that dense to be used like that. I won an easy $20.00 when he fought Larry Holmes, I knew that his management had kept him away from the top contenders that I mentioned, he was unproven. I do not believe in moral victories, only victories. Sonny must have beaten up on other inmates the size of Gerry Cooney in the prison yard.

Yeah, Cooney never got the right opponents so we never got to see what might have been. He made a lot of money and didn’t fight very often. The money must have spoiled him.

Cooney rightly gets accused of a soft run to the title but look at the others Like Tate, Tubbs, Tucker and Dokes. They never beat anything more to get a title shot. even Witherspoon.

Cooney would trouble Liston 4 a little while and make an even fight of it. Does he have a chance of beating Liston? No. Liston's chin is too hard and his stamina too good. Not 2 mention, Cooney couldn't take Sonny's bombs 4 very long once tired. Liston TKO no later than 5.

Sonny by 3rd round kayo. Gerry would barely hit him.
