I have decided to do a 1970's Heavyweight tournament. I have included 32 of the better fighters who did not gain general recognition as Heavyweight Champion, so no Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Spinks and Holmes.

I will not vote, other than to break a tie. The draw was done at random, and with no one seeded.

All matches are to be judged over 15 rounds and finally as it is a 70's tournament, try and analyse the fighters at their 70s peak, even if they peaked in their career before or after the decade.

:Dya know i love ya. i just have trouble picking young against a fighter as technically sound and determined as jerry. he'd throw punches every round...and even if he only lands every 4 rounds, he's still landing more than young :tong

:thumbsup.Yeah, i know this is a terrible matchup popularity-wise for my man Jimmy Young..and I'm a HUGE Quarry fan incidently. it'll be hard to make Jimmy's case here for sure, my man.

Well,....(reclining on the shrink's couch), i guess it's because of his laid back, smooth personna that he had, with his emphasis on that phantomlike, elusive style. He faced big bad Young George Foreman with such total confidence..and I thought of him in that light when Old George Foreman was blasting away all those young whippersnappers in his comeback and ultimately when he made history by blasting unconcious a young stud named Michael Moorer. I thought about how my man made his fight and so smoothly outboxed and nullified a version of Foreman that would have KILLED anyone he fought in his reincarnation in the late 80's and early '90's.
I was also quite impressed with his victories over Ali, Norton and Lyle...and being so much less physically imposing than all those guys. even when he got cut and lost to big bad young Gerry Cooney. Remember, Cooney was putting guys on their asses..but he NEVER even fazed Young..and with all that blood all over the place from that awful cut. Even a shot Jimmy Young was right there in front of Cooney..displaying that first class chin and just a mere whisper of the great defensive skills that he once had. Yessir..the unequaled, Master of Creative Negativity was never really popular and surely isn't even today in retrospect..

In those moments before the Foreman bout, most fighters would have been shitting themselves, like Norton did before the opening bell..Big George bouncing around the ring just exuding menace..hell, he even imtimidated Moorer before their fight...but watch Jimmy just nod this head at George before that fight...almost like passing by your neighbor in going down the driveway to get the morning paper. Jimmy Young was both cool and serenely fearless.

Jorodz, as usual, you make a very good point. With Jerry being more of a volume puncher than anything else, if his temperment was right, and he wouldn't get frustrated and wild in missing the elusive target, the judges may have been disposed to giving him points for agression alone.

thank you sir and that's a good point. i don't necessarily think quarry would dominate or clearly win, but he was an ultra popular guy who would simply throw enough punches to shade it on the scorecards

I admit I'm as prejudiced as hell in favor of Young, but that scenario just might have taken place, especially if Gil Clancy was training Jerry. He would have been screaming at Jerry to "be cool" or something of that nature..to not get wild. young would have frustrated the life out of Jerry more than likely, win or lose.

    I rank them like this-

    1. Young
    2. Lyle
    3. Quarry
    4. Shavers

Yes, I know that Quarry beat Lyle but Lyle would get better. Lyle did well vs. elite HWs and Quarry did not. Lyle gave Foreman and Ali hell. Quarry never fought Foreman but he got the crap kicked out of him by Ali x2... by Frazier x2 (1st fight wasn't too bad)... and by Norton.

Young lost questionable decisions to Ali and Norton. He beat Foreman. He also beat a better Ron Lyle (twice) than Quarry beat. He has to be the best of this bunch.
