Wouldn't have been able to fight all those bums he has listed on his resume. Jones, Hopkins, Toney, and even Tarver would have all has a piece of that ass.:yep
He'd be fighting better fighters....and if not he'd be called out even worse for his ducking ways by an unbiased fanbase who don't just like boxers based on being from their own country. Americans don't support american fighters just for being American, in America, American fighters seem to be judged more harshly if anything cause they're more accessible. Most Americans would probably dislike Calzaghe cause of his slapping but there's no question that without ****** and coming up in America that he would have fought much much better opposition...who knows if he'd be ranked higher ATG cause who knows how many L's he'd take a long the way if he fought good opposition.
Just shows that he's a Brit who has corrected his backward ways. The correct spelling is "Ass", and it's not "Wanker" it's "Jerk off". You Brits should learn to speak English. :rofl
So there's an undefeated American boxer who slaps a lot says he doesn't do rematches (but gives one to Mario Veit) ducks Kelly Pavlik in order to fight a rotting RJJ......
Come on man. What it boils down to is that Calzaghe had a long run of fighting mostly sub par competition. He gets a lot of **** for it, some deserved, most not. He was a terrific fighter, and deserves respect for his accomplishments. But who he did much of it against needs to be taken into account as well. You mentioned Pavlik. He got a **** load of criticism for fighting sub par competition........for 3 or 4 fights. Imagine if he had done it for 7 or 8 years with a sprinkling of good fighters thrown in. So, no. His not being American has little to do with the measure of his public opinion in the US. It did, however, play a role in his inability to get the bigger/tougher fights early in his career.
get real arran, lets not pretend that calzaghe could have coped with the following monsters that got thrown at roy jones Fermin Chirino Danny Garcia Antoine Bird Vinny Pazienza Tony Thornton Eric Lucas Bryant Brannon Lou Del Valle Otis Grant Richard Frazier David Telesco Richard Hall Derek Harmon Glen Kelly Prince Badi Ajamu Anthony hamshaw lets not pretend calzaghe could have coped with the robert allan trilogy that got thrown at hopkins or could have stood toe to toe with the irrepressible hakar joppy echolls ornelas carl daniels howard eastman vanderpool simon brown andrew council william bo james joe lipsey steve frank lets not pretend that calzaghe could have coped with the ferocity of opponent that james toney mixed with during his 168 championship reign - govoner chavers - ricky thomas - glen thomas - danny garcia - larry prather - tony thornton - anthony hembrick - tim littles - vinson durham anyone who thinks that calzaghe could of coped with this level of competition going around in america needs to wake the **** up :rofl
Had Joe Calzaghe been born and raised in America with all the pro-American media hype he would have been considered an all time great along the lines of Willie Pep by careers end. Anyway, Hopkins bitched out of fighting Joe when they were much younger fighters and Joe had to come to America to beat both Hopkin's and Jone's overated American asses right in front of the U.S. fans. Joe's is one of the greats and as boxing writers and experts become more cosmoplitan as boxing becomes more global in nature Joe will be rated very high historically.
