What it boils down to is that Calzaghe had a long run of fighting mostly sub par competition. He gets a lot of **** for it, some deserved, most not. He was a terrific fighter, and deserves respect for his accomplishments. But who he did much of it against needs to be taken into account as well.

You mentioned Pavlik. He got a **** load of criticism for fighting sub par competition........for 3 or 4 fights. Imagine if he had done it for 7 or 8 years with a sprinkling of good fighters thrown in.

So, no. His not being American has little to do with the measure of his public opinion in the US. It did, however, play a role in his inability to get the bigger/tougher fights early in his career.
