Cuba does treat their athletes, as nothing more than a 'country service employee'.

In other words, give them just enough so that they need the government, but not
too much so that they can become independent.

Hey Webb! Not sure what you're saying. Just guess I hate Marxist (think N. Korea, Cuba, Soviet Union) ideology that says...'forget that, Socialism just hasn't been done 'Right' yet. :patsch
I hate unbridled Capitalism as well but so many great athletes from Communist regimes have always held many (not all) of their great stars back.

Side bar: One of my fav athletes of all time is the Brilliant Soviet high-jumper Valerie Brumel (early sixties). Look him up. Pre-Fosbury flop. Perhaps the greatest high-jumper of all time!
OK, back to my beloved classic boxing....:D

I assumed you where from Cuba because of your reaction and thought you were having a real go at me (you had every right too) and I was just tryna save my ass by chatting **** :D

Interesting you mentioned the high jump, as I used to do it at school (district level) as well as long jump and triple jump. Not too well educated on the high jump but in athletics in general and most sports I'm generally quite knowledgeable and always up for a good chat :good

    EE,

The 1976 Cuban Representative at (-60 Kg) Lightweight.

    Reinaldo Valiente. (Age 21)

Another tall and lanky fighter, at 5' 9".

Reinaldo defeated Antonio Rubio Fernandez (Spain) by a (5:0) Decision in the Second Round.

He did not Medal, as he lost in the Third Round to Yugoslavian - Ace Rusevski (5:0).

Ace was 'way too strong' for Reinaldo, who just bulled him all over the ring.

The Cuban Boxing Team, listed Reinaldo at (Age 21), and as having a 163-17 (41 KO's) record, as the 1976 Olympic entrant.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After losing at the 1976 Olympics, and losing a couple of Cuban National bouts he was dropped to the
Cuban Boxing 'B' Team at the end of 1976.

And then to the 'C' Team during 1977. By 1978 (at Age 23), he was off the 'boxing team'.

Reinaldo Valiente's final amateur record was listed as 185-29 (47 KO's).
