Say the Jimmy Young who beat Foreman vs the Michael Spinks from the time he beat Holmes to maybe the Tangstad fight.

I’m not sure but I’m leading towards Spinks in a narrow decision in probably a dull fight.

Jimmy Young was a sparring partner for some of the best fighters at the time of his breakthrough in boxing and was always thrown in with the lions. I remember watching young early in MSG as a prelim fighter and a heavyweight that could not punch was not going anywhere I thought. Jimmy was like a heavyweight Sweat pee whitaker - Joe Louis said he could run but he can't hide- Jimmy could hide in the ring and I thought he beat Ali and he beat Foreman and dropped George - he beat Lyle and others. Spinks was a great light heavyweight Champion, a gold medal winner, he beat an older but still there Larry Holmes in his first Heavyweight fight.

Spinks was a rhythm breaker and this fight would be tight but I think young pulls out a SD

Ugly fight. It would be like watching paint dry. But I lean slightly towards Young.

Jimmy Young, 1977 vs 1985 Michael Spinks, a good match. Young coming off of his big victory over Big George Foreman, comes into this fight with tremendous confidence as he defeated a prime fighter, who was on a comeback to regain his title. Spinks also comes into this match, having prevented defending IBF World Heavyweight Champion from tying the late great Rocky Marciano's, 49-0, 43 KO 's record. Jimmy Young, a natural heavyweight, counters the Spinks Jinx time and again. Jimmy, who has taken devastating blows from the likes of Foreman and Lyle, does not seemed fazed by the blows thrown by Michael, who spent most of his pro career as a light heavyweight, as he was a World Light Heavyweight Champion, who moved up to face Holmes. Jimmy throughout the fight sets a fast pace that Spinks cannot keep up with. Michael attempts a late comeback, but to no avail. After this interesting bout, ring announcer Michael Buffer announces, the new IBF World Heavyweight Champion is Jimmy Young, who has scored a unanimous decision. After the bout it has been confirmed that Jimmy will defend his newly won title against Iron Mike Tyson, in Madison Square Garden. Let's wait and see what is the outcome in this exciting match. Tbh I would probably make Young a 55-45 favorite against Tyson. I don't believe Tyson had the inside game (his inside game was virtually non-existent) ala say Frazier, or Dempsey to deal with Young.

Split decision for Spinks imo but most think Jimmy won.

A 16 years old Tyson in 1984 was kicking the ass of Jimmy young in sparring sessions. The defensive pasive style of young was effective against hard ponderous punchers but he gets smashed by explosive fast punchers like Tyson or pressure inside fighters like Frazier(who kicked his ass even when young was in his peak and Frazier past his prime) as sparring, btw Frazier broke several ribs to Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier in his prime was too much animal for Holmes

Young would frustrate Spinks winning UD.

I’ll cast a vote for Spinks.

As Bummy said he’s a rhythm breaker. I’ll add he’s one of the most awkward fighters you’ll see. He’s awkwardly effective, his style while polished and sharp is uncomfortably unique. He’s a slow starter because he’s a thinker. He takes a look and then implements his fight strategy.

Size is basically equal here. And neither is a big puncher. Young not being a fast starter either and not carrying a heavy punch means Spinks should stay on even terms early. Down the stretch of a competitive fight I just think Spinks has more tools and tricks. Spinks was a bit of a fitness machine, he’d look dead at times late in a fight and then come out and somehow fire punches at will. At the end of the day I just think Spinks is the better fighter. I see him winning the last 2 rounds to seal a very close decision victory.
