    So "thousands" bottled him? Now I know the Marvellous one was one of the toughest men ever to lace up the gloves, but really how is he still here?

    had all kinds of bottles thrown at him in San Antonio

    As I already said, I don't know how many it was but it's not really the point, is it?

    There was speculation that this was, in part, a reaction to the aftermath of Johnny Owen's insanely gallant, and ultimately tragic challenge for Lupe Pintor's bantamweight title earlier that year. Apparently, fans in the Olympic Arena threw glasses of beer at the unconscious challenger, and there likely was some bitterness about that.

    Doesn't excuse what happened to Marvin, however. And, given how long it took for him to become champ, I can understand why he felt such bitterness about it.
