Apologies for drifting OT here, but does anybody remember Carl "The Irish Assassin" Sullivan? He was a Black guy from Pennsylvania who fought Lindell Holmes at the Kingdome in Seattle for a Super-Middleweight belt back in 1990. Always wondered why he used "Irish Assassin" as a nickname. I remember one of the magazines from back then saying that he "crashed the local ethnic market" with that nickname. Anyone know the story behind it?

Don’t know anything about Carl Sullivan, but I remember Roger Mayweather being called “The Mexican Assassin” for a spell because he had such a good record against Mexicans (before running into JC Chavez).

That actually crossed my mind, and I thought that maybe Sullivan adopted that Nickname for similar reasons, though it's hard to tell by looking at his Boxrec page.

Maybe Rocky Lockridge could be known today as the "Murderer of the Mamba" rather than "The Crying Man" for giving Roger his only KO loss in 1.

Haha. I remember the night of Chavez-Taylor. We had a good group of boxing fans who would get together for all the fights — one was a chef in training so we’d pitch in a few bucks apiece and tell him to cook up whatever he wanted … it was always good.

So that night I had to work so they watched the fight and taped it (and saved me a plate!). I went straight from work to the friend who was hosting’s place and they had all agreed no spoilers and started up the replay soon as I got settled.

In the last round, I notice everybody is looking at me instead of the screen so I’m starting to think something is going to happen … and right at the end, of course, it did!

They all said ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ when the fight was stopped, haha.
