It's a shame any of those four fighters were still fighting in 1999. Was it more of an exhibitiion? I'd have thought LaPorte would have knocked Costello out in that 1999 fight, but if I remember right I think Costello win a decision.

Hell, off my head, LaPorte was a soft and aging fighter in the low 140s when he fought an aging and soft Costello who was near 155 pounds..... Both guys were "past-it" and in so-so shape...... Costello W 10 LaPorte.... I have this on tape......

Also, Gregory Page got his revenge over Timmy Spoon on the same card.... Spoon was pathetic and was TKO'd by Page in that rematch somewhere around the 8th round...
    :patsch
Spoon had W 12 Page back in '84 on HBO...... (Won Vacant WBC Title)...:deal

I remember Lonnnie from his days on ESPN, and it was a bit of a shock that he stopped Costello for me at the time.Actually thought that is career would turn out good, but it wasn't meant to be.

Honestly, Smith retired back in the late 1990s with a winning record intact. After his stinker of an effort against Chavez in 1991, Smith strung a lotta' wins together to keep his name alive... Though his comp in the 1990s was marginal...

Smith was a destroyer in that fight. I too remember it being on ITV but I'm sure it was as part of an ITV broadcast on a lunchtime of a British title fight. Might have been a Terry Marsh fight or Chris Pyatt...

Those were great days when boxing was on free TV.

Mates still pull my leg on this one because I went around proclaiming Lonnie as the next big thing. Shame it didn't work out for him. Billy Costello was a good guy and an honest fighter.

National TV fights pretty much died with the early 1990s.... Now even the most absurd **** goes PPV in 2011... Unbelievable to the maxi-pad....
    :deal
Smith looked grade-A when he smoked / dusted Costello....:bbb

If memory serrves me right, Bobby Cassidy was training Lonnie in the mid to late 90's for a comeback, but Lonnies injury prevented him from ever returning.
