http://articles.latimes.com/1985-01-18/sports/sp-8846_1_bruce-curry I had actually never heard about him shooting at Jesse Reid until a couple days ago so I decided to do some research on Bruce. Didn't know he had such mental issues. His fight with Monroe Brooks is a must-watch.
There was an article in KO about the incident. They chronicled the D Curry/Starling and Costello/B Curry fights in the same issue. Jessie Reid basically said that Bruce Curry was past his prime when he dropped down to 140lbs. from 147 after the Hearns Loss. He said that Curry had a huge heart and work ethic, and that he burned himself out overtraining. In retrospect, it was pretty amazing he won a world title because he was well past his best. After the Costello loss, Curry blamed Reid for some reason. Reid had actually helped guide him to the title. Curry never fought after the Costello loss. He was briefly put in a pscych ward I remember in the KO article, he says he is glad he is getting treatment. He says, "I want to see what makes me go and get a gun."
While not nearly as talented or skilled as his brother, Donald, Bruce Curry was a dedicated, exciting fighter with a tremendous heart. Yes, don't turn down a chance to see a tape of Bruce's epic bout with Monroe Brooks. - Chuck Johnston
Always remember the post fight interview after that fight. Brooks, clearly still buzzed comes up to Curry while being interviewed by Gil Clancy and says, "I know there was some bad s**t between us...". Clancy absolutely cringes. Live TV.
