I get the idea that you are selecting these years in order to prove a certain point, but I would point out that I would be able to cherry an alternative set of years, to make the opposite point. What would be much more informative, would be to match the decades on a blind draw.

I could be equally relevant to either. I think that a principle that avoided cherry picking would be more informative. Lets say for example that you could only match the first year of the decade to the first, of the fifth to the fifth.
If I wanted to prove say that the heavyweights of the 30s were better than the heavyweights of the 80s, I could pick a strong end of year top ten from the 30s, and match it against a weak end of year top ten from the 80s.
