Gomez. More skilled, bigger power and a better defender.

Barry, by decison. Gomez was nearing end of rope.

130? Gomez was a bloated has been that tapped with his punches. Barry rolls him if he doesn't cut.

In 1985 McGuigan wins Gomez was finished at this point and lost to Nelson, Layne, and got a gift decision vs Lockridge.

Ya you Lads are right at 130. Prime for prime I have Bazooka though even though I don't like him personally.

I met him personally...he's nothing like the personality he pretended to be and, in the ring, was. It was all part of a psyche game to intimidate opponents, many of whom are, in facts, friends with him nowadays.

I am delighted you have had positive exchanges with him. However the great poster ChrisJS had a very bad experience with him, and for no reason.

He posted it approximately 6 months ago. I have forgotten the details. But he also said Tito Trinidad is one of the nicest persons he has ever met.

I still do not know if the issue is with Gomez or with his son, but as a duo it’s been a bad experience where somebody went back on their word which cost me a fair bit of money. A friend of mine there said it’s very surprising give that Gomez is nice but also said his motor skills have eroded and he has a lot of pride so that could have factored in his 180. Perhaps he was embarrassed he wouldn’t be able to sign items? Either way, I will try to see him in January and simply take him for dinner.

But yes, so far, a bad experience. Which is the opposite of Tito who is just as warm and friendly as you’d expect him to be and then some.

I saw his son Wilfredo Jr once on television being rude to a female reporter, who had the guts of telling him live "I was asking your dad, not you!"

So his son does have a rep. From what I saw, I dont like him that much.

A prime Finbar here, a great year for him. I don’t think the faded Gomez could have handled his pressure all night, but I’d guess he’d see out the final bell, but a convincing UD 15 on the cards here for McGuigan.

Barry McGuigan wins this one. By 1985 Wilfredo Gomez was a spent fighter, he was stopped by Azumah Nelson on Dec 8 1984, struggled with Rocky Lockridge and later to Alfredo Layne. Barry was on a roll in 1984, stopping Jose Caba, Paul De Vorce and in early 1985 defeated Juan La Porte. In June 1985, McGuigan wrested the WBA Featherweight Title from defending champion Eusebio Pedroza by unanimous 15 round decision, decking Pedroza twice. Barry would also defeat challenger Bernard Taylor in Nov 1985. McGuigan's aggressive style would have been too much for a fighter like Gomez who was at the later stages of his career. Barry would duck, bob and weave Gomez to the corners, banging his torso and connecting to the head, not allowing Wilfredo to use any kind of mobility. McGuigan by late stoppage.
