In a prime for prime fight,I'd say that Holmes beats Young by clear unanimous decision. Taking the prime 1977 Young, and putting him in with a faded 1986 version of Holmes,I'd reverse it. Jimmy would be too fast and evasive for the 36 year old Larry.
I think Young would be able to make Holmes look bad and beat him as he beat Ali..(disclaimer)..Young beat Ali, and Norton as well, only to get screwed...and may have very well gotten screwed vs Holmes, but I feel that Young could have frustrated Holmes and taken him out of his game.
Oh sure it would have been dull...dull as hell, but I'm a bit of a masochist in that I actually like these dull strategic chess matches.
Yeah, because Holmes wouldn't be able to employ his gameplan at this point. Holmes wouldn't be able to snap that jab and get the results he wants, while Young would be very evasive and fire his own jab.
Lol. I love chess matches just as long as both fighters aren't too reluctant to throw punches. I'm a fan of both and I wouldn't consider a fight with them "dull" but a decent fight. I can't wait to watch the Holmes-Shavers fights and it's unfortunate there's no Jimmy Young career set. Imagine a Young career set with both Shavers & Lyle fights plus his fights with Ali & Foreman & Norton I'd get that career set faster than a sneeze. I think a prime Young would be too fast for the older Holmes and make him look foolish.
"The Homer" who was 219 pounds for his rematch with Spinks was in-shape and ready to kick some ass...... Holmes really beat Spinks in 1986. But the biased judges (Minus Joe Cortez) gave the gift to Spinks over 15 rds....... That Holmes would beat Jimmy Young based on strength and skills...... Young slippery, but also innconsistant....... HOLMES SWEET HOLMES!bbb MR.BILL:hat
I will take Larry to bang out a close decision victory. Young was a good fighter, but this Larry was still a very good fighter.
Larry was 223 in the rematch with Spinks, which was 2lbs heavier than he was for the first Spinks fight.
I remember holmes saying during his short retirement that he was still unbeaten against heavyweights. he made a point of explaining it. spinks did put on a slippery, speedy masterclass together that owed entirely to boxing in and out ,staying away and being small, unconventional and pacey enough to do it- holmes was just a tad too slow to pin him down at that pace ...but not against a heavyweight like young. young was defensive but never a wriggerly speed king going at that pace. spinks himself almost had a breakdown in the corner even he was nearing exhaustion at one point.
I was thinking something similar myself. This bout would resemble the Ali - Young fight, but with Jimmy being more succesful on the scorecards.
219 according to HBO..... Holmes was 221 for the first fight of '85...... I still have the first fight on tape, but I ****ed up yrs ago and recorded over fight # 2 with a Three Stooges marathon..... Holmes was 225 or 227 for Tyson in 1988........ MR.BILLbbb:hat
Boxrec has been known to screw up the weights of fighters left and right....... Note: I recall Larry Merchant stating that Holmes was wearing pants and shoes at the weigh-in for fight # 2....... That would account for the added weight...... MR.BILL
