Honestly, im not a huge fan either. But he done more than Shane at more weights and Hop. Its awful tight with Hopkins though. I really didn't take the time to factor his longevity or win over Tarver, ubt I still think Oscar has beaten a better calbre of opposition.
I can't disagree wholeheartedly with you. But if you look at there opposition, an argument can be made.
Dorsey, Bredhal, Paez, Molina, Ruelas, Hernendez, Leija, Chavez, Gonzalez, Pea, Camacho, Carpentier, Quartey, Tito, Shane, Gatti, Castillejo, Vargas, Campas, Sturm, Hop, Mayorga, and Mayweather. These are just the fighters who have held titles. I looked at Hopkins resume', it doesn't match up in my opinion.
De La Hoya was an Olympic Gold medallist who started out his career at lightweight trouncing Rafael Ruelas (43-1-0), Genaro Hernandez (32-0-1) and Jesse James Leija (30-1-2) in devastating style - Oscar was a PUNCHER at lightweight. He then moved up to light welter and beat the great JC Chavez (96-1-1) and dangerous and undefeated Miguel Angel Gonzalez (41-0-0). So, De La Hoya was DOMINANT at light welter and below. When he moved up to Welter and beyond he started having a few problems but look at the guys he fought: Pernell Whitaker Ike Quartey Felix Trinidad Shane Mosley (twice) Fernando Vargas Bernard Hopkins Floyd Mayweather And he beat or held his own against all of them (including Hopkins who took 9 rounds to stop him). P4P all time Oscar De La Hoya is MILES above Hopkins - not even remotely close.
Exactly mate. What has Hopkins done? No amateur pedigree to compare with Oscar's Olympic Gold medal, BHop lost his first pro fight (OK we can ignore that), lost to a one handed Roy Jones decisively (in a boring fight), defended his middleweight title 20 times but his best opponents were much smaller guys - Trinidad and De La Hoya. He lost twice to Jermain Taylor (albeit in close fights). Taylor has since lost twice himself to Kelly Pavlik. Bhop has done quite well since moving up - beating Winky Wright and Tarver. But Wright was fighting above his natural weight and Tarver fought poorly. BHop - a legend and all time great, yes. But Oscar De La Hoya ranks MILES above him on the P4P all time list :deal
Really Hopkins best wins where vs the undersized Oscar,Winky and Tito then really a shot a dam near close to shot Antonio Tarver. He can throw a couple of decent wins like John David Jackson,Glen Johnson,Syd Vanderpool and William Joppy in there but it cant **** with Oscars resume.
Looking back at my list I think he's to high, but a top 20 p4p from the specified time frame. An excellent record over very solid competition.
You think he's become "overrated" since that???? :huh I think he's become very underrated and everyone forgets how good the guy was at his best. Just as an idea of how good Jones was and how unbeatable he appeared, When he was knocked out it was so shocking that Charles Barkely said in the middle of a NBA playoff game broadcast "..Oh sh*t, Roy Jones just got knocked out...." Or something like that
