Holmes stays away from the hook much like he did Cooney, only a more solid than Cooney Tua and a more dangerous right hand than Gerry but not as tall or quick....Larry has some shaky moments but take a close UD for the most part but a prime Tua always dangerous and Larry could hit the deck...
I agree. Sometimes it is forgotten that Holmes was fancying the job against Tyson after the first few rounds, and although I think Tyson would of got to him anyway, it was Larry being that bit too cocky that started the down fall against Leg Iron Mike. Tua was no prime Tyson. Tua was at his best, no better than Mercer in 92, and a Holmes in his 40s rather than his late 30s, schooled the previously undefeated Mercer.
Holmes could have still pulled it off. But 1988 was probably the ultimate low point of his career. He was a retired fighter, and had not yet seriously prepared or campaigned for a genuine comeback. Making a single appearance for one last hurrah is not the same as going through the full preparation of relaunching a career and fighting tune-ups in a progressive manner, the way he did in 1991. My guess is, he takes it on the cards, but there would be some dangerous moments in the early rounds. Tua hit like a truck.. He was not real impressed with much of anything that most guys hit him with either. David was also a fast starter in the opening moments and dispatched a very durable Jon Ruiz within literally seconds.
