Nah, I think it's more down to that Spinks didn't have the strength or the power to keep Tyson off even for a round. Holmes handled Tyson well in the clinches. Tyson take on the win over Spinks: "I eat up the little guys." You needed to be physically strong to hang with Mike.

I am not going to bother replying to the part about Spinks, so we'll just stick to Holmes.

If you can't see the difference between a guy having an almost 2 year lay off before facing Tyson, and the same guy having 5 fights over a 10 month period, before facing Mercer just 11 weeks later, then there is really no point trying to debate the issue.

I think the answer is that one of them showed up to fight while the other showed up to collect a paycheck....

    Spot on Magoo...
At least Larry came to fight.
At Mikey Boys absolute peak....these fights late 87 thru 88.
    Spinks lasted seconds
    Holmes a few rounds
    Tyrell Biggs 7 rounds.
    these were Mikes peak fights.
    Spinks looked terrified beforehand.
Larry and Tyrell came to fight.
Spinks "did a Seldon "... he just made the mistake of letting the punch land !

Nah.. He looked pretty scared in that long walk to the ring. And never fought again thereafter. I think he was already in retirement mode. The money was too much to resist. Had he been offered about 5 million less, Cooney would have been his last fight.

    Holmes was scared too.

Its mentioned in Tysons book, Giachetti said just before the Tyson fight, he saw a look on Larrys face, a look that hed never seen before in any of his previous fights.

It was the look of fear.

Tyson himself once said, you can use fear to do your cooking or you can burn your house down with it.

    Spinks chose the latter

Both were intimidated as were most of Tyson's opponents. But Larry came there to fight. Spinks didn't

Larry didn't really fight, though. He was in defensive mode for the first three rounds or so and didn't really open up until the 4th -- and that was when Tyson nailed him.

I gave Holmes the third round and so did two of the three judges. He also wanted to get up after the third knockdown but the three KD rule was in effect and Carlos Pedilla was already on top of him waving it off. That's a lot more fighting than Spinks did.
