I'm thinking of the Eubank who stopped Nigel Benn, then stopped Michael Watson in the rematch.

How many non-heavyweight Brits of the past 30 years have possessed greater ability than this guy?

I say no-one since Conteh in the 1970s. :deal

Corti, Benn, Sherry, Stretch and Watson had a combined record of 112-4-1 and were all Eubanks mid-20s age. He stopped them all furiously in championship fights. He was the undefeated hot stuff in boxing at the time and, after Watson II, there was definitely an aura of invincibility about the guy.

People forget his impressive victories early on when he had no attention, no appeal. Simon Collins was an aggressive powerhouse against hugely talented Tony Collins and nobody wanted to touch him, Eubank took the fight on a few days notice (despite an acid test against Anthony Logan coming up in a week or two) and didn't take a meaningful punch in four rounds and annihilated poor Collins, looking so much better than Tony Collins had against him. And he won literally every minute of every round against true defensive wizard Randy Smith, looking so mature for a 22-year-old.

And Johnny Melfah who finished fighting on his feet against Benn (ABA final) and Graham, was left in intensive care from a single Eubank right with half his jaw shattered.

Anthony Logan landed a left hook clean on Eubank in the 2nd round, the punch rumoured to have scored all of his KD's, and it sounded like a bullet going off, and Eubank just soaked it up like ****ing blotting paper.

Those 'in the know', knew Eubank was going to be, almost impossible to beat.

Great posts from atberry so far. I agree whole-heartedly, I think Eubank was a stupendous fighter. After Watson II, he understandably lost something.

I know he isn't in your 30 year cut-off point, but speaking of the '70's and light heavies? How do you rate Chris Finnegan in comparison?

As for since 1980, I'm racking my brain and struggling to think of anybody to be honest.

*Cue somebody coming in and saying Calzaghe*

The only fight I have seen of Finnegan was the infamous war with Foster in '72. What a fight. I should really track down more of him on the basis of that brilliant, battling display. As it is, I don't feel qualified to comment.

    Young Eubank was a monster.

    Let's see.

Benn, Watson, Herol Graham, Dean Francis, Robin Reid, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Nazeem Hamed, Ken Buchanan, Lloyd Honeyghan, Colin Jones, Carl Froch.

All those possessed greater ability than Eubank, and that's off the top of my head.

One of the worst posts I've seen this week.

Buchanan was not within this time period for a start.

Robin Reid, Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton, and Carl Froch aren't fit to lace Eubank's boots.

Eubank beat prime Benn and prime Watson.

Honeyghan, Calzaghe, Graham and Jones had good ability, but were not as rounded or accomplished as Eubank, IMO.

And I'll pretend I don't even see the name Dean Francis in there. :yikes

For **** sake, how many Eubank fights have you actually seen? What was so great about a fighter who has a near total inability to fight off the front foot, because any time he did he got counterpunched all damn day. Sure, he had lateral movement and a decent enough jab so he can outbox charging fighters. but anybody with counterpunching ability or workrate he couldn't even work out - ever.

Are you really going to tell me that someone as goddamn one-dimensional as Eubnk is the best fighter since the 70s? **** off.

What's so funny? They were all better, including Francis pre-shoulder injury.

I'm deadly ****ing serious. When was the last time you saw a good Eubank performance where he forced a fight? Or against someone with a workrate?

    You forgot Clinton Woods.

On a serious note I purchased a Nigel Benn career set for Christmas, I intend to get a Chris Eubank one soon as my knowledge of his career is embarrassingly low considering who he is.
