From the April 1990 issue of Boxing Illustrated. The list skipped over #11, so I'm not sure whether it's missing a fighter or just misnumbered. List includes fighters "coming from environs of Philly"

    1. Joe Frazier
    2. Tommy Loughran
    3. Ike Williams
    4. Jersey Joe Walcott
    5. Philadelphia Jack O'Brien
    6. Bob Montgomery
    7. Harold Johnson
    8. Jeff Chandler
    9. Matthew Saad Muhammad
    10. Joey Giardello
    12. Bennie Briscoe
    13. Benny Bass
    14. Gil Turner
    15. Meldrick Taylor

Johnson should be higher and I feel Walcot had the tools to do better vs Frazier than he did against Marciano.

Jersey Joe from Philly?? Most of his fights took place in his hometown of Camden.

Camden is basically one mile away from Philly. Just across the PA/NJ border.

Ike Williams is from Trenton, NJ, which is even farther away.

Owen Ziegler needs to be on that list.

Balboa still 100x more popular than the guy at number 1. I would favor Rocky over Frazier and he has a statue which indirectly makes him a historical figure. :SimpHomer:

Odd picks on here. Williams and Walcott, who were from New Jersey. Meldrick Taylor and Gil Turner get on but Hopkins doesn't? Id love to hear the criteria.

Jersey isn't Philly, we don't claim those fighters. If we would claim anyone outside of Philly, it'd be Larry Holmes. Holmes is respectable throughout the whole state.

I think Hopkins was 0-1 when this list was put together.

That might be but Easton is much farther than Camden or even Trenton from Philly.
