Apparently Abe had a bit of success first time around:

All Abe Simon had to do to make Joe (Louis) fumble like a novice was to feint him fast, and you can imagine what Billy Conn will do to a fellow who fumbles like that. And he had Joe very tired by the ninth round. If Joe tired under a pace like that imagine what a fast-moving Conn will do to him. He'll gore the champ to death.“ -Tommy Walsh

Not sure how true this description of the fight is though, potential off night for Joe?

Yes, according to the write-up of the bout on Boxrec, Simon put up a pretty good fight. I wish there was footage of this. I'd be genuinely interested in seeing how Abe was able to make it competitive. He showed a lot of heart in the rematch, but not much else...

The only footage I've seen of him, he's basically getting hit with everything, and constantly staggering around the ring. Based on the Louis footage, no way I see him causing Holyfield any problems whatsoever. How that guy supposedly put up a good fight with Louis the 1st time around, making it to the 13th is a mystery to me. He couldn't even get out of the 3rd round vs. Buddy Baer.
