1990: Undisputed champion Mike Tyson loses to James "Buster" Douglas. 1992: Riddick Bowe dumped his WBC belt into a trash can during a news conference in London, saying he would rather give up that portion of his title than meet Lewis in a mandatory defense. 1993: In Holyfield/Bowe 2, during the seventh round a parachute man drops in and causes a 20 minute delay. 1996: Facing Riddick Bowe, Andrew Golota is disqualified in the seventh round for continuous low blows in a bout he appeared to be winning. ..then a riot took place. 1996: In the rematch with Bowe, Andrew Golota is disqualified in the ninth round for continuous low blows in a bout he appeared to be winning. 1997: During the Lewis/McCall rematch, McCall suffers from mental breakdown and is disqualified in the fifth round. 1997: In the Holyfield/Tyson rematch, Tyson is disqualified in the third round for twice biting Holyfield's ear. That's all I can think of for now. What other crazy stuff happened? What do you think was the weirdest? Thoughts?
Holyfield has two fights cancelled on him, has to fight thiird stringer Bert Cooper, a drug abusing crusierweight with seven loses on his record, and is promptly dumped on his ass and nearly loses his title. A 45 year old man in George Foreman wins the championship. Another 45 year old man in Larry Holmes works his way back into contention with a win over top contender in Ray Mercer, and nerly regains the title against Oliver McCall Larry Holmes dropkicks Trevor Berbick in the mouth off a car on ESPN Trevor Berbick goes ape **** crazy, rapes his baby sitter, and makes a fool of himself at his trial where he claims that he was poisoned in the Tyson fight, the baby sitter should have understood, and that he is still the best heavyweight in the world. A cheating club fighter with no discernable talent who has been knocked out by David Tua in one round named Johnny Ruiz becomes a champion or something Mike tyson says "I'm going to **** you till you love me ******." Tommy Morrison retires due to HIV Longshot of the century champ Buster Douglas eats his way out of his prime, his badly rolled on pay per view, gains 200 pounds, goes into diabetic coma and nearly dies. He makesa comeback, only to be embarrassed by Luis Monoco on Tuesday night fights. Ray Mercer tries to bribe Jesse Ferguson into victory The Riddick Bowe-Elijah Tillery riot The title shots of Joe Hipp, Alexander Zolkein, Jesse Ferguson, Michael Dokes, and Bert Cooper The worst "fight" ever- Jerry Coetzee V Iran Barkley The comebacks of Tex Cobb, Ernie Shaver, and I believe Ron Lyle After embarrasing foremer Lineman Mark Gastineu in a four rounder, 1rst-round-knockout-by-Larry Holmes victim Tim "Doc" Anderson is slipped LSD in the reamatch. Anderson uses a shotgun to get revenge on the promotor, and does prison time. Gastinue blames his girlfriend Brigitt Neilson for the intial loss on national televison. Andrew Golota bites Sampson Pahua
How about Tommy Morrison blowing a big time HW title shot by getting KO'd in round 1 by Michael Bennt? 1990s HW era is IMO The "WHAT IF' era. It could've been amazing but now we're forced to wonder what if: What if Riddick Bowe had controlled his weight? I honestly think Bowe had top 10 ATG talent (at Heavyweight). Had he stayed focused, he could've ruled the roost of the HW division IMO. Instead weight gain and Golota destroyed his career. What if Tyson is found not guilty? Would he have rebounded quicker after The Douglas fight? Would he have faced Foreman or Holyfield sooner? What if Oliver McCall wouldn't have had a nervous breakdown against LL? Could he have beaten him again? I doubt it---although it would've helped Lennox's reputation to truly 'avenge' his loss. What if Golota doesn't throw those two low blows? He beats Bowe easily...then what? I think the first fight was for a title so he would've been a champion of some belt...who would've been next? So many unanswered questions in what should've been a golden era in boxing.
All this is reminding me why I loved the 90s scene so much... Bowe didn't have a title when he fought Golota, so Golota wouldn't have won anything. He was set to fight Ray Mercer in early '97 originally...how would Mercer-Golota '97 have gone? Bowe wanted Tyson, so how about Bowe-Tyson in late '96? Morrison and Bowe were going to fight each other, possibly for the WBO Title, in '95 until almost literally at the press conference they came out and said "We're going with Bowe-Holyfield III instead." What would Bowe-Morrison '95 been like? Henry Akinwande, despite his embarrasing performance against Lewis, was set to be recycled as a contender and was due to fight Holyfield for his WBA & IBF titles in early '98, May I think. Instead Akinwande was struck down by a hepatitis infection with just a week to go and had to pull out. After that, he was still set to get the title shot against Lewis in early 2000 before King decided to switch to pushing John Ruiz's claim instead. Holyfield-Akinwande '98, how does that go? Sometimes it's fun to think about the fights that didn't happen but were, at one point, under serious consideration. Holyfield-Weaver in '95? Bowe-Botha in '94? Bowe-Mercer in '93? Lewis-Holmes in '95? Morrison-Tyson in '96? How about the rumoured Morrison-Hide fight in China (no jokes, please) in '95?
I understood it was Mercer who offered 100k$ to Ferguson for "losing" since he was going to fight Bowe for much better money after that.
Quite correct. I think I am mildly dislexic, as I often reverse things like this. Since you have pointed this out, I will edit my post.
If we had that kind of **** going on this decade the heavys would at least be worth paying attention to
wasn't the tyson quote "i'm gonna **** you till you love me ******" in 2002/2003 at the press coference for the lewis fight. Tyson did in the 1990's tell Razor Rudduck that he's gonna make him his *****.
And the best part was, amongst all the crazy ****, most of these guys could fight, and put on some very good fights.
