That Savold was farther over the hill than Louis was amply evidenced by the fact that the boxing commissioner, with his managers full agreement ,suspended him indefinitely because he wasnt able to defend himself adequately any more.

Young Foreman won the belt by KO'ing in spectacular fashion the UNDEFEATED PRIME Frazier and blew out PRIME Norton afterwards.......old Foreman Ko'ed UNDEFEATED PRIME Moorer who just won the belt from the most likely No1 in the division, PRIME, Evander Holyfield.......and he never had to get off the deck to get it done........vs Marciano who had to get off the deck and needed the eleventh hour hail mary to bail him out against a OLD journeyman Walcott....60000 fight OLD Archie Moore and last but not least, a OLD, big bald spot on his head no snap whatsoever on his punches stuffed Mummy Louis.

Foreman can be beaten or out boxed but no way in hell is Marciano going to walk straight in with wild hooks missing by a country mile with your face begging for upper cuts like he did against Louis....Rocky had only ONE gear and that gear would all of his 185 pounds get Ko'ed cold.

 

Foreman was a fatter, balder, slower, older version of Joe Louis against Rocky without a quick jab. It is not unfair to suggest George could not improve on Louis against Rocky. Where is the proof of it? Bald George simply did not have that kind of form. Nobody knows for sure what it takes to knock Rocky cold. Certainly Nothing George did on his comeback points to him having the answer aged 43 coming off a loss to the guy Michael Bentt would knock out in one round.

Knocking out Moorer is not past what old Louis was capable of. I do not believe Moorer was anything beyond Savold, Bivins or Brion level. Had either of those three (Savold, Bivins or Brion) managed to meet Charles on the evening he had some kind of heart problem (like Holyfeild had when Moorer met him) and miraculously gained Charles' title (like Moorer did when he met Evander) before fighting Louis then Joe would have become champion in the exact circumstances that Bald Foreman did. And like Moorer wasn't, Joe would not have been regarded the best in the world. Simply a champion of circumstance. Like Moorer was.

He knocked out Savold with his left hook.

 

Yes Louis did knock Savold out with a great left hook. it was still a win worthy of a very good contender. Louis was even more conclusive than Rocky was against the same guy.

Charles actually fought Cesar Brion after he was champion. Film of Charles vs Brion shows that Brion was actually quite a handful for Charles on a good night and always would have been.

Imagine Charles had a “funny turn” like Holyfeild had against Moorer? Imagine the title was at stake? Brion could quite easily had become a champion of circumstance beating Charles in 51 then lose to Joe Louis in his next fight.

 

I know.One ko in his last ten fights. Louis became the 10th fighter to stop Savold.

 

A very good contender who was suspended for life for his own protection after his next fight!
