Louis hit Bivins with everything but the kitchen sink in the last round of their fight but couldn't make a dent in him.

 

Bivins was a tough, cagey fighter though. There is no more shame in Louis not decking Bivins than there is that Foreman could not put a dent in often floored Tommy Morrison even though in his next fight Tommy was up and down like a yoyo and smashed to smithereens inside one round against "Michael Bentt". Isnt that interesting?

As a matter of fact Bivins was only 30 years old. And Jimmy had good wins left in him after the Louis fight. Jimmy continued to knock Amateur star Coley Wallace spark out in an upset. Bivins also stopped Aaron Wilson who twice beat Don Cokkell. and a whole four years after Louis beat him Bivins still whipped your favourite big puncher 26-2 Mike Dejohn, who like Joe Louis also could not put Bivins down. At Least Louis beat Bivins though.

Bivins was certainly proud he avoided getting knocked down by Louis. Here is what Jimmy said about joe Louis..

"Then when I did get a fight with Joe Louis, he said he was going to knock me out. At that time, I called him "Big Red", I said 'Big Red, you know you got to hit me first'. So when the fight started, he said he was going to knock me out in four rounds. After the fourth round, I said 'Big Red, I'm still here'. (laugh) He tried his darnest to knock me down, he didn't even knock me off my feet."

The report of the fight make it sound like Jimmy was in survival mode against Louis. Joe was 4-1 to beat Jimmy. If Louis was so bad, so tired, no longer a puncher I doubt he would have been installed 4-1 against a good fighter like Bivins. Nor would Bivins be so proud that he survived being knocked down.

 

Bivins was in survival mode? What was Morrison? When did he engage with Foreman?lol

 

I remember when Bert Cooper fought Old Man Foreman. I was a Cooper fan and at the time I didn't know the extent of his drug issues. With that said Foreman hit him with a shot to the side that sent Bert reeling to the other side of the ring. Smokin Bert quits soon after and in the post fight interview was asked about it.

Bert Cooper said something about "not wanting brain damage". I just though that was funny but telling. This was a guy who was holed up in a hotel room smoking crack for "3 days straight" as he put it but thinking Foreman fists may cause him brain damage.

 

Bivins was a back number he hadn't been ranked for 2 years his winning record from then on was about 50% he lost to all the better men he faced.Wallace was a bust as a pro .Wilson was a journeyman 19-6-0 he had lost his last 2 fights would have 5 more and win just 2 of them.

The commission withheld Coopers purse for "non effort" against Foreman. The crowd were screaming "bull-siht!" Over and over unanimously. One of the loudest chants ever. Seems You can only fool people some of the time .

In interviews Cooper claimed he went into the ring injured. Pity because he looked in shape.

 

There were a lot of contenders fighting each other then so don't pick fault if most had lost ten fights or so. Bivins was only 30 against Louis. He only lost to three more men. Baker, Tommy Harrison and Ezzard Charles and only by decision!

Wallace was an excellent win. Dejohn is a guy you rave over all the time. Bivins whipped him. After losing to Louis Bivins knocked out Wes Bascome who was coming off wins over bob Satterfeild and Johnny summerlin. Bascome knocked Summerlin out and he twice took Liston the distance, once by SD! So Bascome was a great win For Bivins as was Dejohn, Wilson and Wallace. Bivins also beat Charley Doc Williams after losing to joe Louis. Did you know Doc beat Bert Lytel, charley Burley, Henry hall and Bob satterfeild?.

So I believe Bivins was still good against Joe Louis. Jimmy simply was in good company. He was on a circuit of good guys who fought each other. Against black guys you don't know the names of who fought a lot of other good black guys. Jimmy fought nothing but good guys before and after Louis.

In fact Ring Magazine voted Bivins the 26th best heavyweight of all time. That's higher than Moorer or Morison or Bentt by by reckoning.

 

I've never raved about DeJohn all I've said is he had top power.
Bascom was in decline he would win 1 of his next 9 fights and retire.
Williams had begun the downslide and would manage 5 wins of his last11 fights, he was a light heavyweight .
He beat some middleweights and welters and the extremely erratic Satterfield by split dec Wow!


Coley Wallace never did anything,his only claim to fame was playing Joe Louis in a film!

Spin it any way you want. It still shows that Bivins was beating live guys and fought in very good company without ever getting knocked out by any of them during the three years he continued his career.

Morrisons career after fighting Foreman was better?
