Let's say Ray Mercer fought George Foreman instead of Holmes in 1992, who would win?

Probably Foreman. I think Foreman would have probably done a number on Mercer with his jab, and his forward motion would have disrupted Mercer's normal rhythm. Out of all the young, up-and-coming contenders around in 1992, I think Ray Mercer was about the most beatable of the lot. He was the crudest. He was powerful and had a great chin, but against a guy like Foreman, I don't think he would have won. He wasn't elusive enough or fast enough to make George miss or pay!

Foreman seems like the logical pick, but if Mercer shows up in good shape and motivated, he might have given Foreman a similar type of hassle that Alex Sewart did. Especially given that Mercer had both a chin and power that Stewart didn't have. Nevertheless, I'll give George a decision here.

Foreman showed up against Stewart in poor shape. In any case Alex Stewart gave Evander Holyfield a tougher fight than Ray Mercer did. Evander also knocked Mercer down. Holyfield could bang but he was no Foreman. Mercer isn't fast, that good of a boxer to elude Foremean. Foreman TKO's Mercer in no more than 8 rounds.

Foreman batters Mercer with the jab.

Mercer's ring IQ was pretty damn high. He wasn't a slickster but still was very effective in his boxing... when he was motivated and in shape. This could be a very tough fight for old George.

I've always thought this would have been one of the greatest slugfests of the 90s. Two otherworldly tough and powerful guys, no chasing. These two giants would have stand ring center and do you know what. I would have to say this goes the distance as Foreman is stronger than Mercer, but Mercer was never knocked out in his prime.

I expect George vs Bert Cooper scenario!
Mercer would not be KOed but just beaten too much for his own good

The Mercer who lost to Holmes would be out pointed by Forman .The Mercer who destroyed Morrison or took Lewis to hell.and back im not so sure. Forman wouldn't fight Mercer far too risky.

It would definitely be an interesting fight. I think that they would actually box for the first two or three rounds and then start slugging. Because Foreman had better power and a bothersome jab I think that he would probably get the TKO. very few people could knock out ray in his prime... But one of those few is old George. I don't think that it would be a case of Ray being knocked out cold... I just think he would get knocked down three or four times and the ref would call it off

I think if Foreman lands as many shots as Holmes did then Mercer gets stopped in 8 at the latest.

I don't see Mercer fighting the kind of fight either Stewart or Morrison fought. No.

I think Foreman would flatten him. Mercer's forward moving style would make Foreman even more powerful than he already is.

Lou Savarese slugs with Foreman with 12 rounds and for some reason Mercer is floored 3x and stopped in the 8th?

Alex Stewart lasted 10 and was not even floored, and Mercer goes 8 after being floored 3 times?

I see what you're saying... But I think that there's a pretty big difference between 1992 foreman and 1997 foreman. Foreman gave a pretty amazing performance in 1991 against holyfield.... By 1994 he had slipped considerably.... Despite all this he was still able to knock out moorer in a bout he was badly losing. If a 1997 formeman fought a 1992 Mercer I would definitely pick Mercer by decision.
