How do you see this one going. Let's say summer 1993 some big money promoter stumps up the cash to generate enough interest in the cross Atlantic divide that existed in the division. Round 1 (Summer 93) Toney vs Benn Eubank vs Nunn Round 2 (Winter 93) Winners face off Who is able to successfully unify the division where these fights to come off. And whoever it is who succeeds, is it a given they then lose to Roy Jones in their first title defence?
It was supposed to happen, Eubank made it clear at the start of the year he wanted Nunn and Toney by the years end. Then the winner of Eubank-Benn II was supposed to fight Nunn, and the winner of that Toney. I think Nunn beats Eubank widely on points and Toney eats Benn up. However, Eubank can possibly outpoint Toney with his superb stiff jab and impressive lateral movement, and Benn can possibly take out the hands down Nunn with his immense natural punching leverages and intensity.
I think Nunn out points Eubank Toney stops Ben Then in the final Toney stops Nunn quicker than he did at MW.
I'd love to think Eubank stops Nunn late on and Toney has an off night allowing Eubanks to steal a points win. But in my minds eye I just don't see it.
The stumbling block is Nunn. I do think he beats Jones, not on points in a million years, but beats him - Jones lead leap hook is too wide for Eubanks sneaky as hell counter right.
But Nunn, Nunn beats anyone, ever, apart from maybe a young wild Benn at middle believe it or not - suicide to lean back from a man with those natural leverages (which were something to behold).
The thing with James was he used the counter right off a slip, and he couldn't slip a hook at that angle because it was around the high shoulder. Eubank just let it go with timing/reflexes, short as heck and so dangerous looking with all his weight.
Toney outpoints Benn Eubank out times and beats up a past prime Nunn - and Nunn was past prime, losing to Little and Lilles and going to an SD against Cordoba. Eubank tended to raise his game Toney and Eubank edge off towards a controversial SD or draw.
Nunn if moving and mobile, his standard strategy, beats Toney widely. He stood his ground against Toney on instruction of Bob Arum to try to become viewable on TVKO PPV.
Bob Arum said he never wanted Chris Eubank to face Nunn or Toney because he had too much of an awkward style that would make them look bad, and not a big enough name in the US for PPV.
