You make some good points there. Actually I liked the freakshow matches too. It gives one some perspective on just how powerful these MMA fighters are against a common guy with just huge size. I remember Kharitonov taking on a frickin skys****er of a guy and submitting him with ease. And then sometimes the freakshows could actually fight, eg- sapp / Nogueira.
Yeah. Also, it was an era where style vs style fight questions were still important. A lot of Pride revolved around who the best fighter on the planet is, that's why they recruited elite talent from all other combat sports (except boxing), something that the UFC never tried to do. Without Pride you would never see the likes of Cro Cop switching to MMA. The popular Japanese pro wrestlers were there to increase the popularity. A lot of people also thought that those big guys could simply overpower technical fighters. Sapp vs Nogueira is by some criteria a freakshow fight but in reality it was a great fight. Fedor fought those giant freakshows Zulu and Hong Man Choi and it looks hilarious now, but back then a lot of people actually thought that he could have a lot of problems with the size of those guys. Pride was definitely legit, all that shady and freakshow part of it was just to survive. Remember that UFC almost bankrupted at that time, it was a difficult time for MMA.
That was in his post pride fc days when he stopped doing strength and conditioning exercises. He usually fought in the 235-250 range before that and he wasn't that fat. LHW might have been possible but I don't believe he could've ever made MW safely.
The same Fedor that relied on his athleticism, stopped being the best at transitioning from striking to the ground, fell in love with his power and stopped doing S&C, and was tooling Hendo until he got a flukey reverse? Yeah, that Fedor.:roll:
