1996 Mike Tyson vs. 2014 Wladimir Klitschko

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by David Hanssen, Dec 6, 2014.

  1. Who do you got here? Possibly some of you saw Wladimir's performance versus Kubrat Pulev . Very impressive.

Note that this a very bizarre fight. Prior to the fight and during the fight. Mike is 29 years old, still young, but past his best days.

Wladimir is 38 years years old. Arguably at his best, but this was possibly the case 7 years ago, 5 years ago, 3 years ago ...very weird. He prefers to clinch opponents so they don't do any damage on the inside.

I think this fight is a toss up. I'd probably favor Wladimir, because Mike had lost too many of his useful tools from his prime - upperbody movement, setting up his combinations with the jab, deterioration of his punch selection.

Seriously Tyson takes the biggest beating of his life and probably gets put to sleep.

Tyson would need to be at his absolute best to beat Wlad.

If he doesn't bring the kind of motivation that he had at the time of the Spinks fight, Wladamir will not be found waning!

96 Tyson was still extremely dangerous. Who beat him then? .. only ATG Holyfield.

Tyson still landed blows on Holyfield that would have had Wlad doing a drunken version of the huckle buck.

Interesting fight. I'll go with Wlad by late stoppage.

Tyson from the McNeeley fight to retirement went 9-5-0-1 (9) with all his losses via stoppage.

His best win over Frank Bruno the rest of his victories came against the Francis's and savarese's of this world

Plus he lost everytime he stepped up his competition.

That version of Mike was better than the Brewster who knocked Wlad out.

Bruno was near DQ'd for holding in the first round by Mills Lane. Wlad would be issued with the same warning and would subsequently be turned out for the count.

This version of Mike only fought bums and lost everytime he stepped up.

I highly doubt he'd of even fought Brewster based on the calibre of fighters he fought between Holyfield and Lewis.

He was flat footed, came in straight lines, neglected his jab and was only punching in combination sporadically. The power was still there but he wasn't the fighter he once was but he was still young at 29/30.

Wlad wins this one. Too big, powerful, technical and to much of a professional.

Brewster lost to Etienne and Mike blasted out Etienne in round one.

I think Tyson if he had applied himself would paste old wlad out early, well before round 2.

but in that post prison state when he didn't even want to box again, I think waldhas a fair chance of surviving and with the right judges can manufacture a split decision life and death win.

    Yes I know.

But Brewster took a hellacious beating in the first fight against Wlad before Wlad gassed and I don't think Tyson would have been able to stand up to that.

At the same time Ettienne was tailor-made for Tyson chinny, lacking power swarming fighter. It was primed for a high reel KO.

Tyson v Brewster would have been a lot more competitive than Ettienne.

He fought Bruno and Holyfield. Wlad hasn't fought anybody as good as them.

Holyfied had to smother Mike and get up in his grill. He knew he'd be flattened otherwise.
Wlad can't implement this strategy. Mike closes him down and cuts him in two.
Sorry bro. Just the way it is.

prime wlad didn't gass,he got destroyed by journeyman Brewster, unable to cope with his level of skills.

Wlad is a way better fighter than Bruno ever was. Plus Bruno lost the fight before a punch was ever thrown.

Plus he got his ass handed to him by Holyfield and Tyson never beat a fighter as good as Wlad post prison.

    Just the way it is.
