Did you see the fight? Tyson was never in it. If Lewis didn't play it so safe he probably could've blasted him out in 3 rounds. Lewis was old also in this fight, he wasn't in his prime...people seem to always PRETEND that Lewis was prime all the way up until he fought Vitali :patsch

Yeah... but he could have taken 13.5 million to fight. Then, all of the big paydays that would have followed a win over Tyson... including the almost certain rematch with Tyson.

Lewis would have got KTFO before 6 rounds.

Instead of taking $13.5M for fighting Tyson he tales $4M for not fighting him, knowing that if Tyson keeps winning he'll get at least the $13.5M for the fight in the next year or so. Unfortuneatly Holyfield derailed all that.

Over his career he probably made more than Tyson and is one of the biggest earners of all time.

I think he did ok with 'big paydays' mate.

I don't see why he would have looked at that way. Rather than than taking only 4 million and Tyson going around fighting everyone else... why wouldn't Lewis want to take the 13.5, remember that was only the guarantee, I am sure the end would have been more... to beat Tyson, and then the HUGE payday in the rematch... then the big payday against the likes of Holyfield that would have followed the directly afterward? Not only the money, but he also would have put himself on top of the division, rather than sitting in the backround.

Not just about the paydays... how about the legacy? He would have been the recognized Champ at that point, fought Tyson and Holy earlier in their careers, and wouldn't have had to wait until late 1999 to become recognized Champ.

Also, NO Lewis did not make more money than Tyson over his career. Are you crazy?

This is where you are confused. Don King can have options tied to the 13.5 million dollar guarantee because until there is a purse bid, the parties are allowed to negotiate with each other and come to an agreement.

The 13.5 million dollar guarantee was offered to Lewis by Don King as part of negotitions prior to the purse bid. If it was offered as part of the purse bid then Lewis would have had no choice but to accept the money or relinquish his status as mandatory. Lewis to accept the 13.5 million dollar of course because Don King wanted options on Lewis. All facts point to the conclusion that if there were no strings attached he would have accepted an even smaller payday than 13.5M$ and fought Tyson if not for the step-aside money that was offered.

Lewis KO 7. Tyson was in much better form in 1996 then 2002 but he still would be no match for Lennox. The reason why he gets KO'd quicker here is because Tysons work rate would have been higher and he would have been coming in quicker. Lewis's speed was also slightly higher in 96 then 02 so you basicaly have the same fight put on fast foreward in alot of ways. Sure Tyson will land a few more punches then in the 2002 fight but the result doesnt change. Lewis KO's an over aggressive Tyson in 7 rounds. Think of it this way if Buster Douglas can do it in 10 (and that was an even more prime Tyson) Lewis will do it as well.

why are you working so hard to portray Lewis as being scared of tyson?
Everybody knows it was the other way around, tyson and king wanted nooo part of lewis already then...

as time later would tell, lewis beat holyfield twice, and beat up tyson bad.
and as he was at it he cleaned up the division beating all there is to beat, avenging his losses, and saying goodbye with almost pulling vitalis face apart...

off course your agenda down the road is to set up a thread later, asking if lewis was afraid of tyson in 96, what rounds would the klits knock him out then....

    You guys are soooo predictable......

Could twist the question, hell I could post a topic asking-

"Why was Tyson so afriad of Lewis that he paid him $4 million to side step"

    See what I did there.

The 13.5M was an offer from Don King, God knows whether it was a gaunrantee or even if it was worth the paper it was written on.

You make it sound like Lewis took the $4m and sat on his arse while Tyson "went around fighting everyone else" when in fact it was Lewis that staying active while Tyson was KO'd in his next two fights, didn't fight for 18 months after that and then took on a series of so-so heavweights before Lewis KO'd him.

I saw Tyson fight Neilson, the version that Lewis beat is the same guy that fought Neilson, McBride, and Williams. That fight took place 15 after Tyson won his first world title, Tyson's reign was in the 80s he fought Lewis in 02, you do the math.
